London 1846. Der hochverschuldete Hauptmann Willy Birgel (Albert Finsbury), der Geliebte der Sängerin Zarah Leander (Gloria Vane) vom Adelphi Theater, geht nach Neu-Süd-Wales in Australien. Da er kurz vor der Abreise einen Wechsel gefälscht hat und Leander nach seiner Abreise die Schuld auf sich nimmt, kommt sie ins Zuchthaus Paramatta in Sidney. Sie schreibt Birgel, aber er, zu feige, ihr zu helfen, sorgt sich um seine Verlobung mit Carola Höhn (Mary), der Tochter des Gouverneurs von Neu-Süd-Wales. Der Farmer Viktor Staal (Henry Hoyer) holt Leander bei der „Hochzeitsparade“ aus dem Gefängnis; sie brennt ihm durch und sucht Birgel; als der erfährt, warum sie in Paramatta saß, erschießt er sich. Leander findet, als sie ins Zuchthaus zurück will, doch bei Staal ihr Glück.

Sierck schuf ein echtes Melodram (Drama mit Musik) und eine Tragödie wie aus dem Altertum. Ob Birgel nun diesen oder jenen Charakter hat, oder auch Leander: ihr Schicksal ist ihnen vorbestimmt: Tod dem einen und der anderen ein Leben an der Seite von Viktor Staal. Das alles ist makellos inszeniert und die Vorbestimmung kann zwanglos aus dem viktorianischen Umfeld und seinen Regeln abgeleitet werden. Die Liebe aber zwischen Birgel und Leander, Gegenstand von Birgels Verrat, ist von Anbeginn eine traurige Sache, zu der es traurige Lieder gibt und bei der jeder Frohsinn nur Verstellung ist. Leanders erster Auftritt, in dem sie ein selbstbewußtes Lied singt und auf die Störung unsicher reagiert, ist Beispiel der höchst subtilen Inszenierungskunst Siercks – kräftig unterstützt von Benatzkys kongenialer musikalischer Untermalung. Die Romanvorlage von Lovis H. Lorenz, dem späteren Mitbegründer der ‚Zeit‘, die schon 1841/42 spielt, setzt andere Akzente: Menschen gehen nach Australien, können dadurch aber ihrem Schicksal nicht entrinnen. Liebe zwischen Mann und Frau ist eine flüchtige Sache. Aber eine Figur wie Leander und ein tragischer Liebesverrat finden im Roman nicht statt. Hamburg, wo der Ursprung der Geschichte liegt, brennt währenddessen nieder. Durch diesen, ihren ersten deutschen, Film wurde Leander zum Star.

London 1846. The heavily indebted Captain Willy Birgel (Albert Finsbury), the lover of the singer Zarah Leander (Gloria Vane) from the Adelphi Theatre, goes to New South Wales in Australia. Because he has forged a bill of exchange shortly before leaving and Leander takes the blame after his departure, she is sent to the Paramatta penitentiary in Sidney. She writes to Birgel, but he, too cowardly to help her, worries about his engagement to Carola Höhn (Mary), the daughter of the governor of New South Wales. Farmer Viktor Staal (Henry Hoyer) gets Leander out of prison at the „wedding parade“; she elopes and goes in search of Birgel; when he learns why she was in Paramatta, he shoots himself. When Leander wants to return to prison, she finds happiness with Staal.

Sierck created a genuine melodrama (drama with music) and a tragedy as if from antiquity. Whether Birgel has this or that character, or even Leander: their fate is predetermined for them: Death to one and a life at the side of Viktor Staal to the other. All this is immaculately staged and the predestination can be casually deduced from the Victorian environment and its rules. But the love between Birgel and Leander, the subject of Birgel’s betrayal, is a sad affair from the start, to which there are sad songs and where any cheerfulness is only pretence. Leander’s first appearance, in which she sings a confident song and reacts uncertainly to the disturbance, is an example of Sierck’s highly subtle art of staging – powerfully supported by Benatzky’s congenial musical accompaniment. The novel by Lovis H. Lorenz, later co-founder of the German weekly ‚Die Zeit‘, which is set in 1841/42, sets a different tone: People go to Australia, but cannot escape their fate as a result. Love between a man and a woman is a fleeting thing. But a character like Leander and a tragic betrayal of love do not take place in the novel. Hamburg, where the story originates, is burning down in the meantime. Leander became a star through this, her first German film.
