…und wäre die Liebe nicht

Rendsburg, USA, ca. 1910. Anne Baxter (Tacey Cromwell) und Rock Hudson (Clint Saunders) kommen aus der Welt der Saloons und wollen respektabel werden. Sie sind mit Hudsons kleinem Bruder Barry Curtis (Nugget) in die Stadt gezogen und adoptieren die Waise Natalie Wood (Seely). Hudson will Karriere machen; die Bankerstochter Julie Adams (Judith Watrous) bewirkt durch Intrigen, daß Baxter die Stadt wieder verläßt. Hudson heiratet Adams, aber die Kinder mögen sie nicht. Baxter kehrt zurück, will einen Spielsalon eröffnen. In der Sylvesternacht kommt Adams in einem Feuer um, das Hudsons Haus und den neuen Saloon zerstört. Baxter und Hudson finden wieder zueinander.

Schwerfälliges und gesprächiges Gesellschaftsdrama, in der Photographie und den Farben attraktiv. Über die handelnden Personen erfährt man nicht viel.

Rendsburg, USA, ca. 1910. Anne Baxter (Tacey Cromwell) and Rock Hudson (Clint Saunders) come from the world of saloons and want to become respectable. They have moved to town with Hudson’s little brother Barry Curtis (Nugget) and adopt orphan Natalie Wood (Seely). Hudson wants a career; the banker’s daughter Julie Adams (Judith Watrous) intrigues Baxter into leaving town again. Hudson marries Adams, but the children don’t like her. Baxter returns, wanting to open a gambling parlour. On New Year’s Eve, Adams is killed in a fire that destroys Hudson’s house and the new saloon. Baxter and Hudson find their way back to each other.

Ponderous and talkative social drama, attractive in its photography and colours. One does not learn much about the characters.
