The King of Comedy

New York. Robert De Niro (Rupert Pupkin), Amateurkomiker, möchte gerne in der TV-Show der Fernsehgröße Jerry Lewis (Jerry Langford) auftreten. Er hat in seiner Phantasie Besprechungen mit Lewis. Doch in der Realität will Lewis nichts von ihm wissen. De Niro entführt Lewis; statt Lösegeld verlangt er einen Auftritt. Der wird gewährt und gesendet. De Niro landet im Gefängnis, kommt vorzeitig frei und erhält als Berühmtheit seine eigene TV-Show.

De Niro hat als Stalker eine Traumrolle, die er in Teflon-Manier voll ausspielt; nichts kann ihn erschüttern, nicht einmal seine Verhaftung. Lewis hingegen ist nicht mehr Varieté-Künstler, sondern Charakterkopf und Opfer, hat fast eine Nebenrolle. Da dem Film nur eine Idee zugrundeliegt, hat er Längen; er wirkt düster – ein modernes „All About Eve“.

New York. Robert De Niro (Rupert Pupkin), an amateur comedian, would like to appear on the TV show of television star Jerry Lewis (Jerry Langford). In his imagination, he has meetings with Lewis. But in reality, Lewis wants nothing to do with him. De Niro kidnaps Lewis; instead of ransom, he demands an appearance. This is granted and broadcast. De Niro ends up in prison, is released early and, as a celebrity, gets his own TV show.

De Niro has a dream role as a stalker, which he plays to the hilt in Teflon style; nothing can shake him, not even his arrest. Lewis, on the other hand, is no longer a variety artist, but a character head and victim, almost playing a supporting role. Since the film is based on only one idea, it has its longueurs; it seems gloomy – a modern ‘All About Eve’.
