Stranger on the Third Floor

Reporter John McGuire (Michael Ward) sagt in einem Mordprozess aus, er habe Elisha Cook, jr. (Joe Briggs) beim Verlassen des Tatorts eines Mordes gesehen. Doch nach dem Todesurteil wird er nachdenklich. Er verscheucht den seltsamen Peter Lorre aus dem Treppenhaus seiner Mietwohnung und träumt, sein Nachbar sei ermordet und er deshalb verurteilt worden.  Sein Nachbar wird tatsächlich ermordet; er steht später tatsächlich unter Verdacht.  McGuires Freundin  Margaret Tallichet (Jane) macht sich auf die Suche nach Lorre. Sie entdeckt ihn auf der Strasse, kann ihn schließlich stellen, als er unter ein Auto kommt. Lorre gesteht die Morde. Cook jr. kommt frei.

Der Film gilt als Vorläufer und Vater des Film noir. Aber obwohl seine Photographie teilweise dunkel und ambitioniert ist und ein Alptraum in ihm einen wesentlichen Platz einnimmt, ist seine Grundstimmung so diesseitig und nüchtern, wie man es aus dem RKO Studio erwartet.

Reporter John McGuire (Michael Ward) testifies in a murder trial that he saw Elisha Cook, Jr. (Joe Briggs) leaving the scene of a murder. But after the death sentence is handed down, he begins to have second thoughts. He chases the strange Peter Lorre out of the stairwell of his flat and dreams that his neighbour has been murdered and that he has been convicted as a result.  His neighbour is indeed murdered, and he later finds himself under suspicion. McGuire’s girlfriend Margaret Tallichet (Jane) sets out to find Lorre. She spots him on the street and finally corners him when he gets hit by a car. Lorre confesses to the murders. Cook Jr. is released.

The film is considered the precursor and father of film noir. But although its photography is sometimes dark and ambitious, and nightmares play an important role in it, its overall mood is as down-to-earth and sober as one would expect from RKO Studios.
