Stern von Rio

Brasilien. Werner Scharf (Vincente Pereira) hat im Urwald am Rio Matoros Diamanten geschürft und gefunden – auch einen grossen und schönen Stein. Er flieht vor den Häschern des Konzessionsinhabers für das Gebiet, Gustav Dießl (Felipe Escobar), und bringt ihn seiner Braut La Jana (Concha). Doch kurz danach, noch in der Dorfwirtschaft von Ernst Rotmund (Camillo), wird Scharf verhaftet; La Jana verliert den Stein. Sie reist nach Rio, kann Scharf nicht helfen. Dießl, der unberührt von allem in Rio residiert, fährt mit dem Stein zum Diamantensyndikat nach Amsterdam, wird dessen Mitglied und sucht jemand, der ihn bei einer Diamantenschau präsentieren kann. La Jana ist als blinder Passagier nach Amsterdam gereist und von der Hafenpolizei festgesetzt worden. Dießl kommt mit seiner Landsmännin in Kontakt und wählt sie zur Präsentation des Steins aus, der „Stern von Rio“ getauft wurde. Er wirbt auch privat um sie. Er organisiert auch den Brasilianer Harald Paulsen (Jacobo) zu ihrer Rumbabegleitung. Er hat Gefallen am Diamantengeschäft und will sich in Brasilien ein Konzessionsmonopol verschaffen. Der „Stern von Rio“ soll Höhepunkt der Diamantenschau werden. Doch Ja Jana hat sich mit Paulsen zusammengetan, der für einen Kurzschluß sorgt und im Dunkel den Stein stiehlt. Dießl hindert Max Gülstorff (Hadrian), den privaten Ermittler des Syndikats, La Jana zu verdächtigen. Die muß mit Paulsen auf Tournee gehen und ist unwillentlich an ihn gebunden, bis sie schließlich mit dem Diamanten nach Rio zurückkehrt. Dort geht sie mit ihm zu Scharf, den Dießl freigelassen und ein wenig ausgestattet hat. Doch der weist sie zurück. La Jana wendet sich Dießl zu.

Ein realitätsferner Film der guten Manieren, im Plot mit Geschick ersonnen, voller fähiger Schauspieler und in manchen kurzen Momenten sogar emotional stark. Der Diamant ist Zeichen der Zuneigung, nicht des Geldes. Max Gülstorff, in einer feine Leistung, ist für alle die Schnittstelle. La Jana tanzt ok, hat aber in der Rolle keine anspruchsvolle Aufgabe. Sie starb eine Woche vor der Premiere des Films.

Brazil. Werner Scharf (Vincente Pereira) has been prospecting for and found diamonds in the jungle on the Rio Matoros – including a large and beautiful stone. He flees from the henchmen of the concession holder for the area, Gustav Dießl (Felipe Escobar), and brings it to his bride La Jana (Concha). But shortly afterwards, still in the village tavern of Ernst Rotmund (Camillo), Scharf is arrested; La Jana loses the stone. She travels to Rio, but cannot help Scharf. Dießl, who resides in Rio untouched by anything, travels with the stone to the diamond syndicate in Amsterdam, becomes its member and looks for someone who can present it at a diamond show. La Jana has travelled to Amsterdam as a stowaway and has been arrested by the harbour police. Dießl gets in touch with his compatriot and chooses her to present the stone, christened the „Star of Rio“. He also courts her privately. He also organises the Brazilian Harald Paulsen (Jacobo) to be her rumba accompanist. He likes the diamond business and wants to obtain a concession monopoly in Brazil. The „Star of Rio“ is to be the highlight of the diamond show. But Ja Jana has joined forces with Paulsen, who causes a short circuit and steals the stone in the dark. Dießl prevents Max Gülstorff (Hadrian), the syndicate’s private investigator, from suspecting La Jana. She has to go on tour with Paulsen and is unwillingly bound to him until she finally returns to Rio with the diamond. There she takes it to Scharf, whom Dießl has released and equipped a little. But he rejects her. La Jana turns to Dießl.

A film of good manners, far removed from reality, cleverly conceived in its plot, full of capable actors and in some brief moments even emotionally powerful. The diamond is a sign of affection, not money. Max Gülstorff, in a fine performance, is the interface for all. La Jana dances ok, but has no demanding task in the role. She died a week before the premiere of the film.
