SOS – Feuer an Bord

Barranca, Südamerika. Das Showgirl Jean Arthur (Bonnie Lee) hat sich auf der Durchreise mit den US-Piloten Noah Beery jr. (Joe Souther) und Allyn Joselyn (Les Peters) angefreundet, als sie den tödlichen Absturz von Beery miterlebt. Obwohl empört über die Gleichgültigkeit des Managers Cary Grant (Geoff Carter), bleibt sie für ein paar Tage. Zur Fliegertruppe stößt Flieger Richard Barthelmess (Bat MacPherson), der unter seinem früheren Namen (Kilgan) für den Tod seines Mechanikers verantwortlich gemacht wird, dessen Bruder Thomas Mitchell (Kid Dabb) gerade bei Grant seiner Augen wegen die Fliegerei aufgeben muß. Barthelmess‘ Frau Rita Hayworth (Judy MacPherson) entpuppt sich als Grants frühere große Liebe. Barthelmess erringt in tapferer Notlandung die Achtung der anderen, obwohl er Mitchell nicht retten kann; Grant bittet Arthur indirekt, bei ihm zu bleiben.

Howard Hawks ist der Verkünder von Professionalität. Doch daß die Profis systemisch stets am Rande des Todes wandeln und erkennbar in diese Welt hineinflüchten, weil ihnen die private Welt noch bedrohlicher scheint, prägt sich in diesem Film besonders aus. Barranca, South America. Showgirl Jean Arthur (Bonnie Lee) has befriended US pilots Noah Beery Jr. (Joe Souther) and Allyn Joselyn (Les Peters) while travelling through when she witnesses Beery’s fatal crash. Although outraged by the indifference of manager Cary Grant (Geoff Carter), she stays for a few days. Joining the flying squad is aviator Richard Barthelmess (Bat MacPherson), who under his former name (Kilgan) is held responsible for the death of his mechanic, whose brother Thomas Mitchell (Kid Dabb) has just had to give up flying for his eyes. Barthelmess‘ wife Rita Hayworth (Judy MacPherson) turns out to be Grant’s former great love. Barthelmess makes a brave emergency landing and wins the respect of the others, although he is unable to save Mitchell; Grant indirectly asks Arthur to stay with him.

Howard Hawks is the herald of professionalism. But the fact that the professionals are systemically always walking on the brink of death and recognisably flee into this world because the private world seems even more threatening to them is particularly evident in this film.
