1936. Tom Brown (Richard Gates Jr.), Wohlstandssohn, Robert Young (Roger Ash), Footballheld und James Stewart (John Cross) teilen sich als Neuankömmlinge ein Zimmer in der U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Zu Weihnachten lädt Brown seine Gefährten zu sich nach Hause ein. Young und Stewart und Brown gefällt Florence Rice (Patricia Gates). Die mag vor allem den schüchternen Stewart. 1937 werden die drei ins Footballteam aufgenommen. Young, zu selbstsicher, eckt an. Unerlaubt entfernt er sich vom Gelände der Akademie. Die andern suchen ihn, und der greise Football-Altmeister Lionel Barrymore (Skinny Dawes) bewahrt sie endlich vor dem Hinauswurf. Im Unterricht wird einmal von einem betrunkenen Offizier berichte, der seine Pflicht versäumt und anschließend aus der Navy entlassen wurde. Stewart widerspricht. Der Offizier sei krank gewesen, als der Navigator das Schiff auf Grund laufen ließ. Er habe aber vor einem Militärgericht dem umgekommenen Navigator nicht die Schuld am Untergang des Schiffes geben wollen. Als sich herausstellt, daß Stewart der Sohn des Offiziers ist und seinen Namen nicht vollständig angegeben hat, hat er die Akademie zu verlassen. Barrymore hilft. Als das große Footballspiel mit der Army ansteht, darf Stewart mitspielen. Sein Vater wird rehabilitiert. Die Navy geht schließlich als Sieger hervor. Brown, Young und Stewart ehren Barrymore.

Alles findet an Land statt. Die Geschichte beschwört – in der Ausbildungsstätte – den Geist der „Navy“, der genauso gut auch der Geist der Luftwaffe oder der Armee sein könnte. Tradition, Sportverliebtheit, törichte Männerrituale. Dazwischen drei sehr unterschiedliche Charaktere, gut gezeichnet. Ihre Mädchengeschichten sind weit fernere Ideale. 1936. Tom Brown (Richard Gates Jr.), son of wealth, Robert Young (Roger Ash), football hero, and James Stewart (John Cross) share a room as newcomers at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. For Christmas, Brown invites his companions to his home. Young and Stewart and Brown take a liking to Florence Rice (Patricia Gates). She especially likes the shy Stewart. In 1937, the three are accepted onto the football team. Young, too sure of himself, gets into trouble. He leaves the academy grounds without permission. The others search for him, and the old football master Lionel Barrymore (Skinny Dawes) finally saves them from expulsion. At one point in class, there is a report of a drunken officer who missed his duty and was subsequently discharged from the Navy. Stewart contradicts. The officer was sick when the navigator ran the ship aground. However, he says, he did not want to blame the perished navigator for the ship’s sinking in a court martial. When it turns out that Stewart is the officer’s son and did not give his full name, he has to leave the academy. Barrymore helps. When the big football game with the Army comes up, Stewart is allowed to play. His father is vindicated. The Navy eventually emerges victorious. Brown, Young and Stewart honour Barrymore.

Everything takes place on land. The story evokes – in the training school – the spirit of the „Navy“, which could just as easily be the spirit of the Air Force or the Army. Tradition, sports infatuation, foolish male rituals. In between, three very different characters, well drawn. Their girl stories are far distant ideals. Young James Stewart gets the girl – he’s the nicest of the three.
