Opium

China. Am Tag, bevor sein Schiff in die Heimat geht, hört der Opiumforscher Eduard von Winterstein von Werner Krauss (Nung-Tschang), der besonders wirksames Opium besitzen soll. In dessen Opiumhöhle bitte das junge Mädchen Sybill Morell (Sin) von Winterstein, sie zu erretten. Krauss will ihn zum Konsum einer tödlichen Dosis bewegen. Er erklärt seinen Europärerhass. Vor 17 Jahren hatte seine Frau eine Affäre mit einem Europäer und brachte daraufhin ein uneheliches Kind zur Welt. Krauss tötete seine Frau und nahm das Kind zu sich. Es ist Morell. Von Winterstein kann mit Morell entfliehen. Im heimischen Sanatorium hören die Studenten von Wintersteins Vorträge; sein Lieblingsassistent ist Conrad Veidt (Dr. Richard Armstrong), Sohn eines vor 17 Jahren in China verschollenen Arztes. Morell nennt sich nun (Magdalena). Ein Fremder taucht im Sanatorium auf. Es ist Friedrich Kühne (Dr.Armstrong), opiumsüchtig und Veidts Vater, den von Winterstein unter anderem Namen aufnimmt. Veidt hat einen Reitunfall und wird Patient. Es kommt heraus, daß von Wintersteins Frau Hanna Ralph (Maria) während dessen Abwesenheit eine Affäre mit Veidt hatte. Der bringt sich um, schreibt vorher einen Abschiedsbrief, den er von Winterstein kleiner Tochter Loni Nest gibt, die ihn behält. Ralph beschuldigt sofort von Winterstein, Veidt auf dem Gewissen zu haben. Von Wintersterin ist froh, mit Regierungsgeldern seine Studien in Indien fortsetzen zu können. Dort bandelt er auf einem Fest mit der Fürstin Hanna Ralph an. Krauss, der von Winterstein gefolgt ist, setzt den Fürsten davon ins Bild. Krauss setzt die Stadt in Brand und schiebt es auf den verhafteten Winterstein. Er wird im Löwendschungel ausgesetzt. Morell und sein Diener Alexander Derbosq (Ali) retten ihn. Krauss tötet Derbosq. Wieder in Europa, behauptet Morell, sie habe Veidt getötet, um von Winterstein zu entlasten. Sie wird festgenommen; die Polizei erschießt Krauss. Von Winterstein findet den Abschiedsbrief Veidts. Morell ist rehabiltiert. Von Winterstein nimmt Opium und stirbt. Stummfilm.

Trotz erstrangiger Besetzung ist das schauspielerische Element dieses Streifens eher ein Chargieren; die Geschichte ist pure Kolportage. Der Film, 2018 restauriert und nun in guter optischer Qualität, ist ein schönes Beispiel des Groschenkino aus den Jahren ohne Zensur, was sich in einigen „freizügigen“ erotischen Traumbildern manifestiert. Die Aufklärung über das Gift Opium findet nicht statt.

China. The day before his ship leaves for home, opium researcher Eduard von Winterstein hears from Werner Krauss (Nung-Tschang), who is said to have particularly effective opium. In his opium cave, the young girl Sybill Morell (Sin) asks von Winterstein to save her. Krauss wants to get him to consume a lethal dose. He explains his hatred of Europeans. 17 years ago his wife had an affair with a European and as a result gave birth to an illegitimate child. Krauss killed his wife and took the child to himself. It’s Morell. Von Winterstein can escape with Morell. In his home sanatorium, students listen to von Winterstein’s lectures; his favorite assistant is Conrad Veidt (Dr. Richard Armstrong), son of a doctor who disappeared in China 17 years ago. Morell now calls himself (Magdalena). A stranger turns up at the sanatorium. It is Friedrich Kühne (Dr.Armstrong), addicted to opium and Veidt’s father, whom von Winterstein takes in under a different name. Veidt has a riding accident and becomes a patient. It turns out that von Winterstein’s wife Hanna Ralph (Maria) had an affair with Veidt during his absence. He kills himself, writes a farewell letter beforehand, which he gives to Winterstein’s little daughter Loni Nest, who keeps it. Ralph immediately accuses von Winterstein that he killed Veidt. Von Wintersterin is happy to be able to continue his studies in India with government funds. There he attends a festival with Princess Hanna Ralph. Krauss, who is followed by von Winterstein, puts the Prince in the picture. Krauss sets the city on fire and blames it on the arrested Winterstein. He is abandoned in the lion jungle. Morell and his servant Alexander Derbosq (Ali) save him. Krauss kills Derbosq. Back in Europe, Morell claims that she killed Veidt to get rid of Winterstein. She is arrested; the police shoot Krauss. Von Winterstein finds Veidt’s suicide note. Morell is rehabilitated. Von Winterstein takes opium and dies. Silent movie.

Despite the first-rate cast, the acting element of this film is more of a charging; the story is pure colportage. The film, restored in 2018 and now in good optical quality, is a fine example of cheap cinema from the years without censorship, which manifests itself in some „permissive“ erotic dream images. There is no education about the poison opium.
