Mr. Moto und die Schmuggler-Bande

San Francisco, chinesisch Neujahr. Peter Lorre (Kentaro Moto), in Händler-Oufit, entdeckt in einem Antiquitätenladen eine männliche Leiche. Lorre bucht eine Schiffspassage nach Shanghai. An Bord ist Thomas Beck (Bob Hitchings, Jr.), dessen Vater George Hassell (Mr. Hitchings) der Reeder ist und der dem Sohn einen Brief an Murray Kinnell (Joseph Wilkie) gibt, dem Leiter des väterlichen Diamantenhandels in Shanghai. Lorre und Beck freunden sich an. In Honolulu kommt Virginia Field (Gloria Danton) an Bord. Beck ist von ihr fasziniert. Doch sie verschwindet spurlos. In Shanghai trifft Beck Kinnell; Hassell will von Kinnell, daß dieser Juwelenschmuggler aufspürt. Beck will nur helfen, wenn zuvor Field gesucht wird, die sich im „International Club“ aufhalten soll. Beck findet dort Field, die singt – und Lorre. Clubeigner Sig Rumann (Nicolas Marloff) sperrt beide ein, denn Beck und Field sind ihm, dem Chef der Schmuggler, gefährlich. Lorre hält er für einen Kollegen. Kinnell ist zugegen, als die Polizei zur Befreiung kommt und tötet ‚versehentlich‘ Rumann. Lorre offenbart, dass Kinnell der Kopf der Schmuggler ist.  von diesem festgehalten. Moto fordert Wilkie auf, Marloffs Pistole zu nehmen, wobei sich beim Herausnehmen ein Schuss löst, der Marloff tötet. Als die Polizei das Gebäude stürmt, erklärt Moto, dass Wilkie der wahre Chef des Schmugglerrings ist.

Ein szenisch getriebener Film, der erste der Mr. Moto Serie. Der atmosphärische, dann action-orientierte Beginn mündet nicht etwa in eine Erklärung der Figur des Moto, sondern setzt sich so fort – und auch das Geschehen, obwohl nur begrenzt selbsterklärend, findet keine Auflösung, die seine Gesamtheit erklären würde. Das mindert das Vergnügen aber nicht, sondern hält mit eigenen Vermutungen und Spekulationen wach. Die deutsche Synchronstimme des deutschen Schauspielers Lorre ist hier Horst Gentzen.

San Francisco, Chinese New Year. Peter Lorre (Kentaro Moto), in dealer’s oufit, discovers a male corpse in an antique shop. Lorre books a ship passage to Shanghai. On board is Thomas Beck (Bob Hitchings, Jr.), whose father George Hassell (Mr. Hitchings) is the shipowner and who gives the son a letter to Murray Kinnell (Joseph Wilkie), head of his father’s diamond business in Shanghai. Lorre and Beck become friends. In Honolulu, Virginia Field (Gloria Danton) comes on board. Beck is fascinated by her. But she disappears without a trace. In Shanghai Beck meets Kinnell; Hassell wants Kinnell to track down jewel smugglers. Beck only wants to help if Field, who is supposed to be at the „International Club“, is found first. Beck finds Field there, who sings – and Lorre. Club owner Sig Rumann (Nicolas Marloff) locks them both up because Beck and Field are dangerous to him, the boss of the smugglers. He thinks Lorre is a colleague. Kinnell is present when the police come to free them and ‚accidentally‘ kills Rumann. Lorre reveals that Kinnell is the head of the smugglers. held by him. Moto asks Wilkie to take Marloff’s gun, and when he takes it out a shot goes off, killing Marloff. When the police storm the building, Moto explains that Wilkie is the real boss of the smuggling ring.

A scene-driven film, the first in the Mr Moto series. The atmospheric, then action-oriented beginning does not lead to an explanation of Moto’s character, but continues in this way – and even the events, though self-explanatory to a limited extent, do not find a resolution that would explain their totality. This does not diminish the pleasure, however, but keeps you awake with your own conjectures and speculations.
