Mr. Moto und der Wettbetrug

New York. Peter Lorre (Mr. Moto) unterrichtet Polizeischüler in Kriminologie. Sein Freund Polizeileutnant Harold Huber (Riggs) nimmt Lorre und dessen Schüler Keye Luke (Lee Chan), Sohn des berühmten Detektivs (Charlie Chan) mit zu einem Box-Kampf zwischen Dick Baldwin (Bill Steele) und Russ Clark (Frankie Stanton). Der Sieger darf gegen den Boxmeister Ward Bond (Biff Moran) antreten. Der Mobster Douglas Fowley (Nick Crowder) hat 10.000 $ darauf gewettet, dass Clark nicht die fünfte Runde übersteht. Er geht in der vierten Runde k.o. Kurz darauf stirbt er. Lorre findet Giftspuren an Baldwins Boxhandschuh. Zudem wurde  landesweiten Wetten gegen den Clark gemacht – 100.000 $ insgesamt. Lorre verspricht die Auflösung des Rätsels am Abend des Titelkampfs mit Bond. Er überführt John Hamilton (Philip Benton), den Besitzer der Boxarena.

Man merkt, daß es sich um einen den Umständen halber umgestrickten Stoff handelt, der ursprünglich für die Charlie Chan Serie vorgesehen war. Nicht nur, daß einer der Chan-Söhne übriggeblieben ist: Moto wird in die ihm eher fremde Welt des New Yorker Box-Mobs gestellt, und seiner Interaktion mit der Polizei ist enger als gewöhnlich. Das ist dem Film, der Ideen und Tempo hat, gut bekommen.

Mit Lynn Bari (Penny Kendall), Jayne Regan (Linda Benton), Maxie Rosenbloom (Horace Wellington), George E. Stone (Jerry Connors), Bernard Nedell (Clipper McCoy).

New York. Peter Lorre (Mr. Moto) teaches criminology to police students. His friend Police Lieutenant Harold Huber (Riggs) takes Lorre and his student Keye Luke (Lee Chan), son of the famous detective (Charlie Chan) to a boxing match between Dick Baldwin (Bill Steele) and Russ Clark (Frankie Stanton). The winner gets to face boxing champion Ward Bond (Biff Moran). Mobster Douglas Fowley (Nick Crowder) has bet $10,000 that Clark will not make it past the fifth round. He is knocked out in the fourth round. Shortly after, he dies. Lorre finds traces of poison on Baldwin’s boxing glove. In addition, nationwide bets have been made against the Clark – $100,000 in total. Lorre promises to solve the mystery on the night of the title fight with Bond. He convicts John Hamilton (Philip Benton), the owner of the boxing arena.

One realises that this is a circumstantial rewrite, originally intended for the Charlie Chan series. Not only is one of the Chan sons left over, Moto is placed in the rather alien world of the New York boxing mob, and his interaction with the police is closer than usual. This serves the film, which has ideas and pace, well.
