1916. Leutnant Peter O’Toole (Thomas E. Lawrence) erhält vom Abwehr-Mann Claude Rains (Dryden) die Aufgabe, die Absichten von Alec Guinness (Prinz Faisal) zu erkunden. Bei Guinness eingetroffen, rät er ihm eigenmächtig, in der Rebellion gegen das osmanische Reich auf dem Landweg Akaba zu nehmen, was er mit Omar Sharif (Sherif Ali ibn el Karish) und der Hilfe des Howeitat-Scheich Anthony Quinn (Auda) auch tut. Er berichtet in Kairo und wird von Jack Hawkins (General Allenby) beauftragt, Guerrillanschläge auf türkische Eisenbahnen zu organisieren, was er wenig zimperlich ausführt. Er führt die Araber nach Damaskus, wo ihre Zerstrittenheit die britischen Absichten erleichtert, Arabien zu beherrschen..

Ein Film mit zwei Gesichtern: den prächtigen Totalen von Wüste und Kampf – und dem Persönlichkeitsprofil von Thomas Edward Lawrence, des britischen Offiziers, der sich des arabischen Kampfes gegen das osmanische Reich annahm. Er war ein Egomane und Peter O’Toole sieht ihm äusserlich ähnlich. Er schrieb: „..and wrote my will across the sky in stars.“ Auch die anderen Schauspieler sind glänzend. Die arabische Zerstrittenheit dauert bis heute an.

1916. Lieutenant Peter O’Toole (Thomas E. Lawrence) is tasked by Abwehr agent Claude Rains (Dryden) with finding out the intentions of Alec Guinness (Prince Faisal). Upon arriving at Guinness’s location, he advises him to take Aqaba by land in the rebellion against the Ottoman Empire, which he does with Omar Sharif (Sherif Ali ibn el Karish) and the help of Howeitat Sheikh Anthony Quinn (Auda). He reports back to Cairo and is tasked by Jack Hawkins (General Allenby) with organising guerrilla attacks on Turkish railways, which he carries out with little delicacy. He leads the Arabs to Damascus, where their discord facilitates British intentions to dominate Arabia.

A film with two faces: the magnificent long shots of the desert and battle – and the personality profile of Thomas Edward Lawrence, the British officer who took up the Arab struggle against the Ottoman Empire. He was an egomaniac, and Peter O’Toole bears a physical resemblance to him. He wrote: ‘..and wrote my will across the sky in stars.’ The other actors are also brilliant. The Arab discord continues to this day.
