Landung in Salerno

Ein Strand nahe Salerno, 1943. Amerikanische Soldaten landen am frühen Morgen – und Dana Andrews (Sgt. Bill Tyne) führt sie, nachdem ihr Leutnant bei einer Explosion umkam. Am Ufer wird abgewartet; später geht man in Deckung und Tiefflieger greifen sie an. 12 Kilometer bis zu dem Bauernhaus, das sie von den Deutschen entsetzen sollen. Das gelingt mit großen Opfern gegen Mittag.

Eine einfache und poetisch balladesk gehaltene Geschichte, die den Krieg aus der Sicht des Einzelnen abbildet. Feinde sind anonym in Gestalt von Panzern und Flugzeugen. Einer der besten Filme mit dem 2. Weltkrieg als Thema; ursprünglich wie die literarische Vorlage hochgelobt, heute kaum noch bekannt. Lief bei uns erst 1958 und stark gekürzt an.

A beach near Salerno, 1943. American soldiers land in the early morning – and Dana Andrews (Sgt Bill Tyne) takes command after their lieutenant is killed in an explosion. They wait on the shore; later they take cover as low-flying aircraft attack them. It is 12 kilometres to the farmhouse they are tasked with liberating from the Germans. They succeed, at great cost, around midday.

A simple story told in a poetic, ballad-like style, depicting the war from the perspective of the individual. The enemies are anonymous, taking the form of tanks and aeroplanes. One of the finest films on the theme of the Second World War; originally highly acclaimed, like the novel on which it is based, yet scarcely known today.
