Land der tausend Abenteuer

Nome, Alaska, 1900. Goldgräber Stewart Granger (George Pratt) schickt seinen Partner und Freund John Wayne (Sam McCord) nach Seattle, um Maschinerie einzukaufen und seine französische Freundin Lilyan Chauvin (Jenny Lamont) nach Alaska zu holen. Doch die ist inzwischen mit dem Butler Marcel Hillaire verheiratet. Wayne amüsiert sich im „Hen House“ und trifft auf Capucine (Michel Bonet, genannt Angel) aus New Orleans, die Ähnlichkeit mit Chauvin hat und die einwilligt, mit ihm nach Alaska zu gehen. Erst auf dem Schiff begreift sie, dass der Ehe-resistente Wayne sie nicht für sich, sondern für seinen Freund will. In Nome trifft sich auf den Gauner Ernie Kovacs (Frankie Cannon), der es durch Schwindel zum Hotelbesitzer gebracht hat und den sie von früher kennt. Sie geht lieber mit Wayne zur Mine. Granger ist abwesend, aber sein 17 jähriger Neffe Fabian (Billy Pratt) fängt sofort Feuer für Capucine. Granger verträgt die Wahrheit besser als erwartet, kümmert sich um Capucine, was Wayne eifersüchtig macht. Kovacs versucht, seinen Hausdiener Mickey Shaughnessy (Peter Boggs) dazu zu mißbrauchen, Ansprüche auf die Goldmine zu stellen, die von Soldaten beschlagnahmt wird. Wayne und Granger decken das Komplott auf. Wayne macht endlich Capucine eine Liebeserklärung.

Rabaukenstück, das sich von Schlägerei zu Schlägerei bewegt und offen Klamauk bietet. Aber mit einer guten Story, vitalen Figuren und einem Ohrwurm als Titelsong zu Recht ein geheimer Kultfilm, dessen Charme man sich schwer entziehen kann. Obwohl Alaska kurz zuvor vollwertiger Bundesstaat der USA geworden war, ist kein Meter dort gedreht worden. Die Idee stammt vom Wiener Kafka, die Ausarbeitung vom Ungarn Fodor. Das Titellied sang im Original Johnny Horton, in der deutschen Fassung Ralph Bendix.

Nome, Alaska, 1900. Gold miner Stewart Granger (George Pratt) sends his partner and friend John Wayne (Sam McCord) to Seattle to buy machinery and bring his French girlfriend Lilyan Chauvin (Jenny Lamont) to Alaska. But she has since married the butler Marcel Hillaire. Wayne enjoys himself at the ‚Hen House‘ and meets Capucine (Michel Bonet, known as Angel) from New Orleans, who resembles Chauvin and agrees to go with him to Alaska. Only on the ship does she realise that Wayne, who is resistant to marriage, wants her for his friend, not for himself. In Nome, she meets the crook Ernie Kovacs (Frankie Cannon), who has become a hotel owner through fraud and whom she knows from the past. She prefers to go to the mine with Wayne. Granger is absent, but his 17-year-old nephew Fabian (Billy Pratt) immediately falls for Capucine. Granger takes the truth better than expected and looks after Capucine, which makes Wayne jealous. Kovacs tries to manipulate his servant Mickey Shaughnessy (Peter Boggs) into laying claim to the gold mine, which is confiscated by soldiers. Wayne and Granger uncover the plot. Wayne finally declares his love for Capucine.

A rowdy film that moves from brawl to brawl and openly offers slapstick comedy. But with a good story, lively characters and a catchy theme song, it is rightly a secret cult film whose charm is hard to resist. Although Alaska had recently become a full-fledged state of the USA, not a single metre of the film was shot there. The idea came from Kafka in Vienna, and the script was written by Fodor from Hungary. The original title song was sung by Johnny Horton, and the German version by Ralph Bendix.
