Kehr zurück, kleine Sheba

Shirley Booth (Lola Delaney) will ein Zimmer ihres Häuschens an die Studentin Terry Moore (Mary Buckholder) vermieten. Ihr Mann, der trockene Alkoholiker Burt Lancaster (Doc Delaney), schätzt das junge Mädchen und mißbilligt ihre Beziehung zu dem oberflächlichen Studenten Richard Jaeckel (Turk Fisher). Er greift just an dem Abend zur Flasche, als Moore, die Jaeckel den Laufpaß gegeben hat, ihren auswärtigen Verlobten Walter Kelley (Bruce Cunningham) empfängt. Sie heiratet ihn sofort und meldet sich.. Lancaster kommt in die Klinik und fängt sich wieder.

OK – Booth spielt prima. Aber das traurige Schicksal der beiden gescheiterten Alten hat man sofort begriffen und der Rest ist das Ausspielen kleinbürgerlicher Peinlichkeit. Kein Wunder, daß das Stück, das im Theater zuerst gut ging, dann nur noch einer kleinen Gemeinde zusagte.

Shirley Booth (Lola Delaney) wants to rent a room in her cottage to student Terry Moore (Mary Buckholder). Her husband, the dry alcoholic Burt Lancaster (Doc Delaney), appreciates the young girl and disapproves of her relationship with the superficial student Richard Jaeckel (Turk Fisher). He falls off the wagon on the very evening when Moore, who has given Jaeckel her walking papers, receives her out-of-town fiancé Walter Kelley (Bruce Cunningham). She marries him immediately and enlists. Lancaster comes to the clinic and recovers,

OK – Booth’s acting is great. But the sad fate of the failed old couple is immediately understood and the rest is a play of petty bourgeois embarrassment. No wonder that the play, which initially did well in the theatre, then only appealed to a small community.
