Kampf in den Bergen

Kentucky. Ein Prolog zeigt einen Kampf in der Fehde der Bergbauerfamilien (Falin) und (Tolliver), deren Gründe niemand mehr kennt. Jahre später kommt der Ingenieur Fred MacMurray (Jack Hale) zu den (Tollivers), um Kohlerechte auf ihrem Land zu erhalten. Er erkennt, daß deren Neffe Henry Fonda (Dave Tolliver), mit einer Wunde in Lebensgefahr schwebt und rettet ihn. Fonda will seine Cousine Sylvia Sidney (June) heiraten, aber die interessiert sich für MacMurray. Sie besucht ihn  häufig mit ihrem kleinen Bruder George McFarland (Buddy). Als MacMurray Sidney ermutigt, eine Ausbildung zu machen, folgt sie ihm nach Gaptown. Fonda verfolgt das Paar mit einem Gewehr. Aber die (Falins) warten auf ihn. MacMurray kämpft gegen die (Falins), während Fonda mit Sidney flieht. MacMurray schickt Sidney zu seiner Schwester nach Louisville. Zu Beginn des Winters verlässt Fonda die (Tollivers). Als die (Falins) die Brücke zur Mine sprengen, wird McFarland dabei getötet. Sidney kehrt zur Beerdigung zurück. Fonda, ebenfalls dabei, geht unbewaffnet zu den (Falins). Robert Barrat (Buck Falin), der Vater, entschuldigt sich bei Fonda. Als der geht, schießt ihm Henry Brandon (Wade Falin), wütend weil Fonda früher seinen Bruder getötet hatte, in den Rücken. Barrat schießt Brandon an und trägt Fonda zu dessen Vater Fred Stone (Judd Tolliver). Die Väter schließen Frieden. Fonda stirbt. MacMurray kann Sidney heiraten.

Die Fehde, die sich selbst nährt und deren Ursprung im Dunkel ist, in einem der ersten Dreistreifen-Technicolor Farbfilme. Dies Thema, dramatisiert lange vor der Zeit der psychologisierenden Western, kommt mit Charakterskizzen aus. Zwar schön in den Farben, aber insbesondere zu Beginn ein wenig schwerfällig – so wie die Protagonisten. Fahrt kommt später auf, genau wie die emotionale Anteilnahme.

Kentucky. A prologue shows a fight in the feud between the mountain farming families (Falin) and (Tolliver), the reasons for which no one knows anymore. Years later, engineer Fred MacMurray (Jack Hale) comes to the (Tollivers) to obtain coal rights on their land. He realises that their nephew Henry Fonda (Dave Tolliver), is in mortal danger with a wound and rescues him. Fonda wants to marry his cousin Sylvia Sidney (June), but she is interested in MacMurray. She visits him frequently with her little brother George McFarland (Buddy). When MacMurray encourages Sidney to get an education, she follows him to Gaptown. Fonda pursues the pair with a rifle. But the (Falins) are waiting for him. MacMurray fights the (Falins) while Fonda escapes with Sidney. MacMurray sends Sidney to live with his sister in Louisville. At the beginning of winter, Fonda leaves the (Tollivers). When the (Falins) blow the bridge to the mine, McFarland is killed in the process. Sidney returns for the funeral. Fonda, also there, goes to the (Falins) unarmed. Robert Barrat (Buck Falin), the father, apologises to Fonda. As he leaves, Henry Brandon (Wade Falin), angry because Fonda had killed his brother earlier, shoots him in the back. Barrat shoots Brandon and carries Fonda to his father Fred Stone (Judd Tolliver). The fathers make peace. Fonda dies. MacMurray is able to marry Sidney.

The feud, self-feeding and dark in origin, in one of the first three-strip Technicolor colour films. This subject, dramatised long before the days of psychologising Westerns, gets by with character sketches. While beautiful in colour, it is a little ponderous, especially at the beginning – as are the protagonists. The action picks up later, as does the emotional involvement.
