Bedford Falls, New York, Heiligabend 1945.

Warner (Mr. Gower), Todd Karns (Harry Bailey), Samuel S. Hinds (Vater Bailey).

Lied: “Buffalo Girl (Won’t you Come out Tonight).” Text und Musik: William Cool White.

Bedford Falls, New York, Christmas Eve 1945: In heaven, prayers are heard for James Stewart (George Bailey) and angel Henry Travers (Clarence) is sent to the city to earn his wings. Travers deals with Stewart’s life: in 1919 he saved his brother’s life on the ice, becoming deaf in one ear. Shortly afterwards he saved his boss, the pharmacist, from accidentally sending poison instead of medicine to a child. In 1928, just about to embark on the long-awaited world tour, he falls in love with Donna Reed (Mary Hatch), but shortly after that his father dies of a stroke and he has to take care of his „Savings and Loan“ institution. In 1932 he is able to avert a collapse of the savings bank against the machinations of rich Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter) and marries Reed. In 1945 his brother returns from the war and receives a medal from the president. But Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy), who works in the savings bank, loses the $8000 cash which Barrymore finds, hides and puts pressure on. The desperate Stewart sees himself as useless and wants to commit suicide, but now Travers leads him to a city as it would look like without him. Stewart is convinced. In addition, the townspeople have collected the missing money for him.

A song of praise for the average person from the small American town that became a Christmas classic on TV long after its premiere. A praise of the very average direction effort would not be appropriate: its emotional power has faded, even where it was demonstratively intended. If it weren’t for James Stewart, who fits in well in such a milieu, albeit with distance: the film would have disappeared.
