Ich weiß wohin ich gehe

England. Wendy Hiller (Joan Webster) weiß immer, was sie will. Mit 30 will sie den alten Norman Shelley (Robert Bellinger) heiraten, den reichsten Industriellen von England, und macht sich auf nach den Hebriden zur Insel Kiloran, wo er auf sie wartet. Die Bootsfahrt nach Kiloran kann wegen des Gail, einer stürmischen Wetterlage, nicht stattfinden. So wartet sie auf der Isle of Mull. Dort trifft sie Roger Livesey (Torquil MacNeil), einen Marineoffizier, der versucht, nach Kiloran zu fahren. Sie werden für die Nacht in dem nahe gelegenen Haus von Torquils Freundin Pamela Brown (Catriona Potts) untergebracht. Der Sturm dauert an. Tags darauf kommen sie zu den Ruinen von Schloß Moy. Livesey will nicht hinein: er ist der Eigentümer der Insel Kiloran, und denen gilt im Schloß ein Fluch. Ein weiterer Sturmtag. Hiller zieht in ein Schloss auf der Insel, das einem Freund ihres Verlobten gehört. In Achnacroish ist Hiller überrascht, Livesey wiederzutreffen. Sie nehmen an einer Ceilidh-Feier zur  Diamantenhochzeit eines Arbeiterpaares. Hiller versucht, Finlay Currie (Ruairidh Mhór) davon zu überzeugen, sie sofort nach Kiloran zu bringen. Der lehnt ab. Doch der junge Murdo Morrison (Kenny) will es für 20 Pfund tun, genug Geld, um endlich Margot Fitzsimmons (Bridie) zu heiraten. Livesey  kommt mit. Der Motor des Bootes wird überflutet, und sie werden beinahe im Strudel der Corryvreckan gefangen, aber Livesey kann den Motor rechtzeitig wieder starten. Endlich klart das Wetter auf. Hiller will von Livesey einen Abschiedskuss. Der betritt das Schloss Moy, und der Fluch wirkt: Wenn ein (MacNeil) von Kiloran es wagt, die Schwelle von Moy zu überschreiten, wird er bis ans Ende seiner Tage an eine Frau gekettet sein und „in seinen Ketten sterben“. Hiller kehrt zurück.

Ein heimliches Meisterwerk. Pressburger / Powell steigen in das Biotop der schottischen Provinz mit einer Heldin, welcher der Kopf zurecht gerückt werden muß und auch wird. Ihr Film ist atmosphärisch dicht photographiert, zügig inszeniert, in vielen Details voller Einfälle und im dramatischen Höhepunkt mit einem verschlingenden Wasserstrudel fesselnd. Wendy Hiller hält die Distanz, immer interessant, nie vertraut werdend. Ob der Held mit ihr glücklich wird?

England. Wendy Hiller (Joan Webster) always knows what she wants. At 30 she wants to marry old Norman Shelley (Robert Bellinger), the richest industrialist in England, and sets off for the Hebrides to the island of Kiloran, where he is waiting for her. The boat trip to Kiloran cannot take place because of the Gail, a stormy weather condition. So she waits on the Isle of Mull. There she meets Roger Livesey (Torquil MacNeil), a naval officer who is trying to go to Kiloran. They are accommodated for the night in the nearby house of Torquil’s friend Pamela Brown (Catriona Potts). The storm continues. The next day they arrive at the ruins of Moy Castle. Livesey does not want to go inside: he is the owner of Kiloran Island, and they are cursed in the castle. Another storm day. Hiller moves into a castle on the island, which belongs to a friend of her fiancé. In Achnacroish Hiller is surprised to meet Livesey again. They attend a ceilidh celebration for the diamond wedding of a working couple. Hiller tries to persuade Finlay Currie (Ruairidh Mhór) to take them to Kiloran immediately. He refuses. But young Murdo Morrison (Kenny) wants to do it for 20 pounds, enough money to finally marry Margot Fitzsimmons (Bridie). Livesey comes along. The engine of the boat is flooded and they are almost caught in the vortex of the Corryvreckan, but Livesey can start the engine again in time. Finally the weather clears up. Hiller wants Livesey to kiss him goodbye. He enters Moy Castle and the curse takes effect: If a (MacNeil) of Kiloran dares to cross the threshold of Moy, he will be chained to a woman for the rest of his days and „die in his chains“. Hiller returns.

A secret masterpiece. Pressburger / Powell climb into the biotope of the Scottish province with a heroine whose head must and will be straightened. Their film is atmospherically densely photographed, quickly staged, full of ideas in many details and in the dramatic climax captivating with a devouring whirlpool of water. Wendy Hiller keeps the distance, always interesting, never becoming familiar. Will the hero be happy with her?
