Vermont. Gregory Peck (John Ballantine) tritt als „Dr. Edwardes“ den Dienst in einer Nervenkinik an. Er soll Leo G. Caroll (Dr. Murchison) als deren Leiter ersetzen, leidet aber an Amnesie. Ärztin Ingrid Bergman (Dr. Constance Peterson) verliebt sich in ihn. Sie und die Polizei hält ihn für den Mörder des richtigen Dr. Edwardes. Sie folgt ihm nach New York, bringt ihn nach Rochester zu ihrem väterlichen Kollegen Michael Chekhov (Dr. Alex Brulov). Dort stellt sich seine Unschuld heraus. Bergman stellt den wahren Mörder Leo G. Caroll, der um seine Position fürchtete. Der bedroht sie, begeht aber Selbstmord.

Doctor Ingrid Bergman (Dr. Constance Peterson) falls in love with him. She and the police think he is the murderer of the real Dr. Edwardes. She follows him to New York, brings him to Rochester to her fatherly colleague Michael Chekhov (Dr. Alex Brulov). There, he turns out to be innocent. Bergman confronts the real murderer Leo G. Caroll, who feared for his position. The latter threatens her, but commits suicide.

Demonstrative portrayal of psychoanalysis, naive and mechanistic, a dream sequence by Salvador Dali: Hitchcock was more interested in the fact that things never mean what they seem. Fascinating.
