Saumur, Loire 1819. Gualtiero Tumiati (Félix Grandet) ist reich und ein extremer Geizhals. Seine Frau Giuditta Rissone und Tochter Alida Valli (Eugenia Grandet) fügen sich. An ihrem 23. Geburtstag kommt aus Paris Vallis Eugénies Cousin Giorgio De Lullo (Charles Grandet) zu Besuch, auf Geheiss seines Vaters, der nach dessen Abreise wegen seines Bankrotts Selbstmord begangen hat. Er will weiter nach Indien, aber er und Valli verlieben sich ineinander. De Lullo ist nun mittellos; zu seiner Abreise gibt ihm Valli ihr Vermögen an Münzen – Geschenke ihres Vaters. Als der davon erfährt, sperrt er Valli ein. Die erbt später sein Vermögen – und wartet auf De Lullo. Der war in Indien erfolgreich, will in Paris adlig heiraten, besucht aber Valli und gesteht ihr die Wahrheit, lässt sie entscheiden, ob er zu ihr zurückkehren soll. Sie wendet sich ab von ihm. Doch seine Hochzeit gerät in Gefahr, als der Bankerott seines Vaters ruchbar wird. Er hat etwa 1 Million Franc, benötigt aber 4, um die Familienehre zu retten. Valli hört davon – und bezahlt. Jetzt hat sie nur noch 16 Millionen. De Lullo kann heiraten.

Intensive Verfilmung des Stoffes durch den Italiener Soldati. Er durchleuchtet gnadenlos die Psyche des krankhaft geizigen Vaters Grandet – und von dessen Neffen, der ebenso mehr geschäftlich als emotional konditioniert ist. Seine Tochter, von Valli wirksam zurückhaltend gespielt, ist ein leidender, aber kalkulierender Gutmensch.

On her 23rd birthday, Valli’s cousin Giorgio De Lullo (Charles Grandet) comes to visit from Paris at the behest of his father, who committed suicide after his departure due to bankruptcy. He wants to continue on to India, but he and Valli fall in love. De Lullo is now penniless; when he leaves, Valli gives him her fortune in coins – gifts from her father. When he finds out, he locks Valli away. She later inherits his fortune – and waits for De Lullo. He has been successful in India and wants to marry into nobility in Paris, but visits Valli and confesses the truth to her, letting her decide whether he should return to her. She turns away from him. But his wedding is in jeopardy when his father’s bankruptcy becomes public knowledge. He has about 1 million francs, but needs 4 million to save the family honour. Valli hears about this – and pays. Now she only has 16 million left. De Lullo can get married.

An intense adaptation of the material by Italian director Soldati. He mercilessly examines the psyche of the pathologically miserly father Grandet – and that of his nephew, who is equally conditioned by business rather than emotion. His daughter, played effectively and with restraint by Valli, is a suffering but calculating do-gooder.
