Erbschaft um Mitternacht

Ein Sumpf, unweit von New Orleans. Ein Indianer fährt Rechtsanwalt George Zucco (Mr. Crosby) zu einem einsamen Herrenhaus, wo die Hausdame Gale Sondergaard (Lu) ihn und die Familie des verstorbenen Millionärs (Cyrus Canby Norman) erwartet. Um Mitternacht will Zucco das Testament des vor 10 Jahren Dahingegangenen verlesen. Er findet im Schrank das Testament geöfffnet vor. Die alleinige Erbin ist Modezeichnerin Paulette Goddard (Jenny – im Original Joyce – Morgan), sollte sie nicht binnen 30 Tagen sterben oder wahnsinnig werden. Dann erbt der in Testament 2 bezeichnete, der nicht bekannt ist. Die Anwesenden werden nachts dadurch erschreckt, daß John Wray („Irrenpfleger“ Hendricks) mit dem Gewehr ihnen berichtet, ein mörderischer Irrer sei entkommen. Tatsächlich verschwindet Zucco rätselhaft; später wird seine Leiche gefunden. Goddard findet mit Bob Hope (Wally Campbell) ein im Garten verstecktes Diamanten Collier des Erblassers; Goddard wird von einem Unbekannten verfolgt, der das Collier raubt und alle fürchten, sie würde wahnsinnig. Am Ende stellt sich Douglas Montgomery (Charles Wilder) aus der Familie als Täter heraus, der mit Wray gemeinsame Sache gemacht hat und der Erbe des zweiten Testament ist. Happyend, Verlobung Goddard mit Hope.

Trotz guter Besetzung zeigt der Film keine Spur von Originalität. Er bedient nur die Klischees des Spuk-Hauses, die damals wohl etwas weniger abgegriffen waren. Bob Hope ist in seinen Späßen freilich weniger penetrant als später in seiner Karriere.

An Indian drives lawyer George Zucco (Mr. Crosby) to a lonely mansion where the lady of the house, Gale Sondergaard (Lu), awaits him and the family of the deceased millionaire (Cyrus Canby Norman). At midnight, Zucco wants to read the will of the man who died 10 years ago. He finds the will open in the closet. The sole heir is fashion designer Paulette Goddard (Jenny – in the original Joyce – Morgan), should she not die or go insane within 30 days. Then the person named in Will 2, who is not known, inherits. Those present are startled at night by John Wray („lunatic nurse“ Hendricks) with a rifle reporting to them that a homicidal maniac has escaped. In fact, Zucco mysteriously disappears; later his body is found. Goddard, with Bob Hope (Wally Campbell), finds a diamond necklace belonging to the decedent hidden in the garden; Goddard is pursued by an unknown man who steals the necklace and everyone fears she is going mad. In the end, Douglas Montgomery (Charles Wilder) of the family turns out to be the culprit, who has been in cahoots with Wray and is the heir to the second will. Happy ending, engagement of Goddard to Hope.

Despite a good cast, the film shows no trace of originality. It merely serves the clichés of the haunted house, which were probably a little less hackneyed at the time. Bob Hope is admittedly less penetrating in his jokes than later in his career.
