Ein Herz kehrt heim

1956. Der berühmte Dirigent Willy Birgel (Robert Lennart) kehrt in die Stadt in Deutschland zurück, in der er vor 23 Jahren begann. Er stellt fest, daß seine ehemalige Freundin Maria Holst (Irene) den Fabrikanten Hans Nielsen (Martin Thomas) geheiratet hat, ihr Sohn Maximilian Schell (Wolfgang Thomas) aber sein Kind ist. Schell hat musikalische Ambitionen, bleibt aber bei Maria Holst, obwohl Birgel ihn in die USA einlädt. Birgel nimmt sein unstetes Dirigentenleben wieder auf.

Das Motiv von Birgels Emigration wird nie erwähnt – um Probleme dieser Art mogelt sich der Film herum. Aber er ist unsentimental, sachlich, gut besetzt und nur manchmal in den Dialogen steif.

1956. The famous conductor Willy Birgel (Robert Lennart) returns to the town in Germany where he started 23 years ago. He discovers that his former girlfriend Maria Holst (Irene) has married the factory owner Hans Nielsen (Martin Thomas), but that their son Maximilian Schell (Wolfgang Thomas) is his child. Schell has musical ambitions but stays with Maria Holst, although Birgel invites him to the USA. Birgel resumes his unsteady conducting life.

The motive of Birgel’s emigration is never mentioned – the film cheats its way around problems of this kind. But it is unsentimental, factual, well cast and only sometimes stiff in the dialogue.
