Dr. Kildare – Sein erster Fall

Dartford, Connecticut. Die elterliche Familie erwartet den frischgebackenen Arzt Lew Ayres (Dr. James Kildare) vom Studium zurück. Doch der gesteht seinem Vater und Kollegen Samuel S. Hinds (Dr. Steve Kildare) daß er nicht die Praxis übernehmen, sondern lieber in New York am Blair General Hospital arbeiten möchte. Dort lernt er den Grantler Lionel Barrymore (Dr. Leonard Gillespie) im Rollstuhl kennen und wird mit Arbeit überhäuft, wobei ein Patient durch den Fehler eines Pflegers stirbt, während Ayres der jungen Selbstmörderin Jo Ann Sayers (Barbara Chanler) das Leben rettet – und davor, als Psychopathin eingestuft zu werden, indem er die Geschehnisse einer wilden Nacht aufklärt. Er widersetzt sich den Autoritäten und wird suspendiert. Schon will er wieder heim, da holt ihn Barrymore, eine glänzender Arzt, als Mitarbeiter direkt zu sich.

Beginn einer Serie von 9 Filmen mit dem Duo Barrymore/Ayres, der später selbst medizinisch tätig war. Hier wird Ayres als unkonventioneller Mediziner wie sein Mentor Barrymore angelegt. Zügig inszeniert, mit einem positiven, aber nicht spießigen Bild amerikanischen Bürgertums.

Dartford, Connecticut. The parental family expects the newly qualified doctor Lew Ayres (Dr. James Kildare) to return from his studies. But he confesses to his father and colleague Samuel S. Hinds (Dr. Steve Kildare) that he does not want to take over the practice, but would rather work in New York at Blair General Hospital. There he meets the grumpy Lionel Barrymore (Dr Leonard Gillespie) in a wheelchair and is swamped with work, with a patient dying due to a nurse’s mistake, while Ayres saves the life of young suicide Jo Ann Sayers (Barbara Chanler) – and from being classified as a psychopath – by solving the events of a wild night. He defies the authorities and is suspended. Already he wants to go home again, when Barrymore, a brilliant doctor, brings him straight in as an associate.

Beginning of a series of 9 films with the duo Barrymore/Ayres, who later practised medicine himself. Here Ayres is cast as an unconventional physician like his mentor Barrymore. Briskly staged, with a positive but not stuffy image of American bourgeoisie.
