Die weiße Wüste

Der Reeder Eduard von Winterstein (Iwan) lässt sein Schiff ‚Senta‘ gegen Unfall mit 500.000 Kronen versichern. Mit Kapitän Carl Balta (Gaustadt) ist Winterstein sich gegen 100.000 Kronen einig, daß die ‚Senta‘ von ihrer nächsten Reise nicht zurückkommen darf. Von Winterstein hat seiner Wirtschafterin Nora Swinburn (Karin) die Ehe versprochen, verstösst sie. Er wirbt vergeblich um Dorina Shirley (Liv), doch deren Pflegemutter Frieda Sieweit-Michels (Alma Troll) gibt sie zu ihm in den Dienst, und ein Richter spricht aus, sie habe das Recht dazu. Ihre Bewerber Fritz Orwa (Björn) und Carl de Vogt (Fischer Sigurd) heuern auf der ‚Senta‘ an. Auch Swinburn gerät an Bord. Der Kapitän bedrängt sie. Steuermann Josef Rehberger (Peer) bohrt das Schiff an. Es gibt eine Meuterei wegen schlechten Essens. De Vogt macht Swinburn einen Antrag, kämpft mit dem Kapitän. Ein Eisberg schlägt das Schiff leck. Anders als die Mannschaft kann der Kapitän das Schiff nicht mehr verlassen. Die Besatzung wandert über Packeis. Eine Gruppe entfernt sich heimlich, nimmt die Nahrung mit – und erfriert. Orwa und De Vogt kämpfen mit Eisbären. Endlich kommen sie mit Swinburn heim. Dort ist Shirley inzwischen volljährig und kann von Winterstein verlassen. Der kommt in einem Steinsturz um. Swinburn und De Vogt, Shirley und Orwa sind beieinander. Stummfilm.

Diese Hagenbeck-Produktion erzählt mit für einen Stummfilm ungewöhnlicher Natürlichkeit ihre Geschichte, die nur jene Übertreibungen nutzt, die sie etwas würzen sollen. Ansonsten verstärken Außenaufnahmen am Ort des Geschehens ihre Wirkung, während die anfangs geschilderte Absicht des Versicherungsbetruges später kaum noch vorkommt. Kann man noch gut ansehen. 2016 restauriert.

The shipowner Eduard von Winterstein (Iwan) has his ship ‚Senta‘ insured against accidents with 500.000 crowns. Winterstein and Captain Carl Balta (Gaustadt) agree for 100,000 crowns that the ‚Senta‘ may not return from her next voyage. Von Winterstein has promised his landlady Nora Swinburn (Karin) marriage, but he breaks this promise. He courts Dorina Shirley (Liv) in vain, but her foster mother Frieda Sieweit-Michels (Alma Troll) gives her into his service, and a judge pronounces that she has the right to do so. Her suitors Fritz Orwa (Björn) and Carl de Vogt (Fischer Sigurd) sign on at the ‚Senta‘. Swinburn also comes on board. The captain harasses them. Helmsman Josef Rehberger (Peer) drills into the ship. There is a mutiny because of bad food. De Vogt proposes to Swinburn, fights with the captain. An iceberg hits the ship with a leak. Unlike the crew, the captain can no longer leave the ship. The crew wanders across pack ice. A group secretly departs, takes the food with it – and freezes to death. Orwa and De Vogt fight polar bears. Finally they return home with Swinburn. There Shirley is now of age and can leave von Winterstein. Winterstein dies in a rock fall. Swinburn and De Vogt, Shirley and Orwa are together. Silent movie.

This Hagenbeck production tells its story with a naturalness that is unusual for a silent film, using only those exaggerations that are supposed to spice it up a bit. Otherwise, outdoor shots at the scene of the event reinforce its effect, while the intention of the insurance fraud described at the beginning hardly occurs later on. Can still be seen well. Restored in 2016.
