Indiana, ca. 1872. Der junge Victor Mature (Paul Dreiser, später: Dresser) rückt von daheim aus, weil er nicht Priester, sondern Musiker werden möchte. Er schreibt Lieder und schlägt sich auf Jahrmärkten durch; seine Freundin Carol Landis (Mae Collins) hilft ihm. Ein Auftritt wird von der Sängerin Rita Hayworth (Sally Elliot) und ihrem Produzenten John Suton (Fred Haviland) besucht und verlacht. In Buffalo revanchiert sich Mature, indem er eine Vorstellung von Hayworth stört; in New York stellt er fest, dass Hayworth das Lied „Come Tell Me“ von ihm gestohlen hat, was er mit seinem neuen Verleger James Gleason (Pat Howley) nutzt, Hayworths Songschreiber zu werden. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander, aber eine Affäre Matures mit Mona Maris (Gräfin Mariana Rossini) beendet die Freundschaft. In San Francisco schmuggelt Gleason den Song „My Gal Sal“ in Hayworths Revue; Versöhnung.

Paul Dresser war der ältere Bruder des Schriftstellers Theodore Dreiser, der dem Fox-Studio Lieder und Lebensgeschichte verkaufte. Aber die Songs stehen im Mittelpunkt, einige nicht von Dresser, und ein paar Szenen überbrücken sie. Die reichen aus, um Dresser als oberflächlichen, den Frauen stets aufgeschlossenen Gesellen zu schildern. Gefällig und humvorvoll.

Indiana, around 1872: young Victor Mature (Paul Dreiser, later Dresser) leaves home because he wants to become a musician rather than a priest. He writes songs and makes a living at fairs; his girlfriend Carol Landis (Mae Collins) helps him. A performance is attended and ridiculed by the singer Rita Hayworth (Sally Elliot) and her producer John Suton (Fred Haviland). In Buffalo, Mature returns the favour by disrupting a performance by Hayworth; in New York, he discovers that Hayworth has stolen the song ‘Come Tell Me’ from him, which he uses to become Hayworth’s songwriter with his new publisher James Gleason (Pat Howley). The two fall in love, but an affair between Matura and Mona Maris (Countess Mariana Rossini) ends their friendship. In San Francisco, Gleason smuggles the song ‘My Gal Sal’ into Hayworth’s revue; reconciliation.

Paul Dresser was the older brother of writer Theodore Dreiser, who sold songs and life stories to the Fox studio. But the songs take centre stage, some not by Dresser, and a few scenes bridge them. They are enough to portray Dresser as a superficial journeyman who is always open to women. Pleasant and full of humour.
