Die Kameliendame

Paris 1847. Die schwindsüchtige Lebedame Greta Garbo (Marguérite Gautier) verliebt sich in Robert Taylor (Armand Duval), arrangiert sich aber lieber mit dem reichen Henry Daniell (Baron de Varville). Als der auf eine Reise geht, will sie ihr bisheriges Leben aufgeben und zieht mit Taylor aufs Land. Von Taylors Vater Lionel Barrymore (M. Duval) heimlich unter Druck gesetzt, verläßt sie ihn, aber auch Daniell. Ihre Schwindsucht bricht aus, sterbend versöhnt sie sich mit Taylor.

Berühmteste Verfilmung des Stoffes: intelligent, gut ausgestattet und brillant photographiert. Die simple Geschichte wird mit vielen Zutaten angereichert und – auch durch die Vielfalt der Typen – interessant gehalten. Dumas hatte seine Geschichte offenkundig aus schlechtem Gewissen geschrieben. In ihr dominiert, anders als im Film, das ökonomische Argument.

In 1847 Paris, the consumptive life-lady Greta Garbo (Marguérite Gautier) falls in love with Robert Taylor (Armand Duval), but prefers to make arrangements with the rich Henry Daniell (Baron de Varville). When he goes travelling, she decides to give up her previous life and moves to the country with Taylor. Under secret pressure from Taylor’s father Lionel Barrymore (M. Duval), she leaves him, but also Daniell. Her consumption breaks out and, dying, she reconciles with Taylor.

The most famous film adaptation of the material: intelligent, well-designed and brilliantly photographed. The simple story is enriched with many ingredients and kept interesting by the variety of characters. Dumas had obviously written his story out of a guilty conscience. In contrast to the film, the economic argument dominates.
