Die Insel des Dr. Moreau

Im Pazifik, 1911. Seemann Michael Yorck (Andrew Braddock) landet mit einem Rettungsboot der gekenterten ‚Lady Vain‘ auf einer Insel. Nach Bewusstlosigkeit findet er sich in der Obhut von Burt Lancaster (Dr. Moreau) wieder, der ein Forschungslaboratorium auf der Insel hat. Lancaster lebt dort mit Barbara Carrera (Maria), die er einst in Panama City gekauft hat, und seinem Verwalter, dem Söldner Nigel Davenport (Montgomery). Auf der Insel begegnet Yorck seltsamen Kreaturen, auch einer Gruppe von Tiermenschen in einer Höhle, die in Lancaster ihren Meister sehen. Töten ist ihnen verboten. Yorck erkennt Lancasters Streben: er will aus Tieren Menschen machen – das gelingt teilweise, aber stets besteht die Gefahr eines Rückfalls. Einer von ihnen tötet einen anderen. Yorck tötet ihn, denn sonst hätte er in das von ihm mehr als der Tod gefürchtete ‚Haus der Schmerzen‘ zurückgemusst. Lancaster, der seine Gebote bedroht sieht, holt nun Yorck ins Haus und will ein Tier aus ihm machen, damit auch diese Mutation beschrieben werden kann. Das bringt den gefühlsresistenten Davenport in Rage – Lancaster erschiesst ihn. Dass Lancaster seine eigenen Gebote bricht, bringt die Tiermenschen zur Revolte. Sie töten Lancaster und befreien die Tiere, die nun angreifen. Yorck kann mit Carrera fliehen.

Das seinerzeit umstrittene Buch von Wells in einer Verfilmung aus einer Zeit, da die Kontroversen keine Bedeutung mehr hatten. Daß die Grenze zwischen Mensch und Tier fließend ist, war zu diesem Zeitpunkt keine Blasphemie mehr. Diese Verfilmung gilt als die beste. Man spricht offen von Genmanipulation – eine real erst später eröffnete Möglichkeit. Ohne viel Dialog, mit einfachen, aber wirksamen Szenen nimmt der Film eine konservative Haltung ein: der Mensch möge sich nicht über die Kreatur erheben. Tut er es dennoch, muß das mißlingen. Lancaster ist ein nachdenklicher, aber entschlossener Wissenschaftler, der anders denkt. Am schwächsten ausgestattet sind die Rollen von Yorck und Carrera, die nur Statisten bleiben. Wieder dabei: Lancasters steter Freund und Partner Cravat.

In the Pacific, 1911. Sailor Michael Yorck (Andrew Braddock) lands on an island with a lifeboat from the capsized ‚Lady Vain‘. After losing consciousness, he finds himself in the care of Burt Lancaster (Dr Moreau), who has a research laboratory on the island. Lancaster lives there with Barbara Carrera (Maria), whom he once bought in Panama City, and his caretaker, the mercenary Nigel Davenport (Montgomery). On the island, Yorck encounters strange creatures, including a group of animal people in a cave who see Lancaster as their master. Killing is forbidden to them. Yorck recognises Lancaster’s quest: he wants to turn animals into humans – he succeeds to some extent, but there is always the danger of a relapse. One of them kills another. Yorck kills him, because otherwise he would have had to return to the ‚house of pain‘ he feared more than death. Lancaster, seeing his commandments threatened, now brings Yorck into the house and wants to make an animal out of him so that this mutation can also be described. This infuriates the emotionally resistant Davenport – Lancaster shoots him. The fact that Lancaster breaks his own commandments causes the animal people to revolt. They kill Lancaster and free the animals, who now attack. Yorck is able to escape with Carrera.

Wells‘ book, controversial at the time, in a film adaptation from a time when the controversies no longer mattered. That the boundary between man and animal is fluid was no longer a blasphemy at that time. This film version is considered the best. There is open talk of genetic manipulation – a real possibility that only opened up later. Without much dialogue, with simple but effective scenes, the film takes a conservative stance: let man not rise above the creature. If he does, however, it must fail. Lancaster is a thoughtful but determined scientist who thinks otherwise. The weakest roles are those of Yorck and Carrera, who remain mere extras. Back again: Lancaster’s constant friend and partner Cravat.
