Die große Schlacht des Don Camillo

Brescello. Bürgermeister Gino Cervi (Giuseppe Bottazzi, genannt Peppone) kandidiert als Mitglied der KPI für das Parlament. Cervi muß dafür den Volksschulabschluss nachmachen. Fernandel (Don Camillo) gelangt in die Situation, diskret zu helfen. Doch Cervi will danach einen Hof nicht räumen lassen, den ein Genosse dem neuen Eigentümer übergeben soll. Es stellt sich heraus, daß die Kommunisten dort für sich einen amerikanischen Panzer retten wollten. Fernandel behält die Oberhand. Einen Streich Fernandels im Wahlkampf führt dazu, daß Cervi dessen Hühner stehlen und braten lässt. Dafür kommt er vor Gericht. Fernandel sorgt für die Rettung von Cervis Ehre. Cervis Frau Leda Gloria (Maria Botazzi) verdächtigt ihren Mann der Untreue mit Claude Sylvain (Clotilda Mari), einer Parteisekretärin. Fernandel weiß zu verhindern, daß es tatsächlich zu einer Untreue kommt. Cervi wird als Abgeordneter gewählt und muß als Bürgermeister abtreten. Am Tag seiner Abreise nach Rom passt Fernandel den Zug an der nächsten Station ab. Zunächst einmal fährt Cervi nicht nach Rom.

Nicht mehr von Duvivier inszeniert, ändert sich in diesem dritten Don Camillo-Film die Atmosphäre. Burleske Handlungselemente und nicht mehr die Personen stehen im Vordergrund. Aber darin sind andere besser. Der Sprecher wird zur Erklärung stark strapaziert, und der philosophische Hintergrund ist kaum noch sichtbar. Der wohl schwächste der 5 Filme um das Paar.

Brescello. Mayor Gino Cervi (Giuseppe Bottazzi, called Peppone) is running for Parliament as a member of the KPI. Cervi has to achieve the elementary school diploma for this. Fernandel (Don Camillo) gets into the situation to help discreetly. But Cervi does not want to have a farm evacuated afterwards, which a comrade is supposed to hand over to the new owner. It turns out that the communists wanted to save an American tank there for themselves. Fernandel has the upper hand. A practical joke by Fernandel during the election campaign leads Cervi to have his chickens stolen and roasted. He’ll be tried for that. Fernandel saves Cervis‘ honor. Cervis‘ wife Leda Gloria (Maria Botazzi) suspects her husband of infidelity with Claude Sylvain (Clotilda Mari), a party secretary. Fernandel knows how to prevent infidelity from actually occurring. Cervi is elected as a member of parliament and has to resign as mayor.On the day of his departure for Rome, Fernandel meets the train at the next station.  First of all, Cervi does not go to Rome.

No longer directed by Duvivier, the atmosphere changes in this third Don Camillo film. Burlesque plot elements and no longer the characters are in the foreground. But others are better at it. The narrator is heavily strained for explanation, and the philosophical background is hardly visible. Probably the weakest of the 5 films about the couple.
