Die Gladiatoren

Rom. Kaiser Jay Robinson (Caligula) misst dem Gewand des gekreuzigten Jesus Christus mögliche magische Kraft zu und will es in seinen Besitz bringen. Sein Besitzer Victor Mature (Demetrius von Korinth), versteckt es. Er wird deshalb als Gladiator in die Arena gezwungen. Als seine Liebe Debra Paget (Lucia) stirbt, schwört er in der Arena Gott ab und wird Offizier der Palastgarde und der Geliebte von Susan Hayward (Messalina), der nymphomanischen Gattin von Barry Jones (Claudius). Robinson, der merkt, dass in dem Gewand kein Zauber ist, wird getötet, Mature besinnt sich wieder auf Gott und Jones wird neuer Kaiser.

Die süssliche Religiosität ist in dieser Fortsetzung von „Das Gewand“ (1953, R: Henry Koster) schwächer ausgebildet. Das erhöht aber nicht etwa die Spannung dieses saftlosen Films, in dem auch die Arena des Circus Maximus noch langweilt.

Rome. Emperor Jay Robinson (Caligula) attributes possible magical power to the robe of the crucified Jesus Christ and wants to take possession of it. Its owner, Victor Mature (Demetrius of Corinth), hides it. He is therefore forced into the arena as a gladiator. When his love Debra Paget (Lucia) dies, he swears off God in the arena and becomes an officer in the palace guard and the lover of Susan Hayward (Messalina), the nymphomaniac wife of Barry Jones (Claudius). Robinson, realising there is no magic in the robe, is killed, Mature recollects God and Jones becomes the new emperor.

The sweet religiosity is weaker in this sequel to „The Robe“ (1953, directed by Henry Koster). But that does not increase the tension of this sapless film, in which even the arena of the Circus Maximus is still boring.
