Die Fahrten des Odysseus

Ithaca, Griechenland, ca. 1260 vor Christus. Silvana Mangano (Penelope), Frau des Königs Kirk Douglas (Odysseus), klagt über die vielen Heiratsbewerber, da Douglas seit 10 Jahren aus dem Trojanischen Krieg nicht zurückgekehrt ist. Mangano glaubt an seine Rückkehr, obwohl er von Wahrsagerin Elena Zaleshi (Cassandra) wegen der Zerstörung des Neptun-Tempels als zur ewigen Wanderschaft verflucht gilt. Douglas Sohn Franco Interlenghi (Telemachus) will zur Suche aufbrechen, aber seine Mutter bittet ihn, zu bleiben.  Douglas wird ohne Gedächtnis nahe Ithaka auf den Phaeakischen Inseln angespült, wo ihn die Prinzessin Rossana Podestà (Nausikaa) findet. Sie und Jacques Dumesnil (König Alkinoos) halten ihn für adlig und Podestà macht sich Hoffnungen. In Ithaka ist mit dem stolzen Anthony Quinn (Antioous) ein weiterer Freier eingetroffen. Douglas, zur Heirat mit Podestà bereit, findet sein Gedächtnis wieder. Er erinnert sich der Landung auf einer verlassenen Insel, wo seine Leute in einer Höhle den Zyklopen Umberto Silvestri (Poliphemus), den Sohn des Neptun,  finden. Silvestri, der sie verschlingen will, entdecken sie den Wein und blenden ihn. Auf der Weiterreise überleben sie den Gesang der Sirenen und landen auf einer weiteren Insel. Dort entdecken sie die Zauberin Silvana Mangano (Doppelrolle:: Circe). Sie verwandelt Douglas Leute in Schweine und hält ihn sechs Monate in ihrem Bann. Seine Leute, wieder Menschen, drängen zum Aufbruch. Sie brechen ohne ihn auf und versinken im Sturm. Mangano bietet Douglas Unsterblichkeit. Er lehnt ab. Ende der Rückblende. Podestà ist enttäuscht, akzeptiert aber seine Rückkehr nach Ithaka. Dort kommt er vor den Wettbewerben an, die über Manganos Bewerberauswahl entscheiden, und tarnt sich als Bettler. Als er im Wettbewerb als einziger seinen alten Bogen spannen kann, wird er erkannt. Douglas tötet die Freier und verspricht Mangano, bei ihr zu bleiben.

Kirk Douglas schafft in einer für ihn passenden Rolle eine der markantesten Verkörperungen des Odysseus, und etlichen Drehbuchautoren ist es gelungen, einen äußeren wie inneren Pappmaché-Look à la Sandalenfilm zu vermeiden. Dieser Odysseus liebt das hier und jetzt, er hat die Vergangenheit mit dem Gedächtnisverlust meisterhaft verdrängt und sein Wille nach Heimkehr ist wohl nur Fassade. Da ist ihm auch die Unsterblichkeit als Gott zu fade, die in diesem Film von Circe angeboten wird. Aufwendig gemacht, auch textlich von gutem Niveau.

Ithaca, Greece, ca. 1260 B.C. Silvana Mangano (Penelope), wife of King Kirk Douglas (Odysseus), complains about the many marriage applicants, because Douglas has not returned from the Trojan War for 10 years. Mangano believes in his return, although he is considered cursed to eternal wanderings by fortune teller Elena Zaleshi (Cassandra) because of the destruction of the Neptune Temple. Douglas‘ son Franco Interlenghi (Telemachus) wants to set off on a search, but his mother asks him to stay.  Douglas is washed up without memory near Ithaca on the Phaeacan Islands, where the princess Rossana Podestà (Nausikaa) finds him. She and Jacques Dumesnil (King Alkinoos) consider him noble and Podestà gets his hopes up. Another suitor has arrived in Ithaca with the proud Anthony Quinn (Antioous). Douglas, ready to marry Podestà, finds his memory again. He remembers landing on a deserted island where his people find the cyclops Umberto Silvestri (Poliphemus), son of Neptune, in a cave. Silvestri, who wants to devour them, is introduced to the wine and blinded. On their journey they survive the song of the sirens and land on another island. There they discover the sorceress Silvana Mangano (double role:: Circe). She turns Douglas‘ people into pigs and keeps him under her spell for six months. His people, human beings again, urge him to leave. They leave without him and sink into the storm. Mangano offers Douglas immortality. He refuses. End of flashback. Podestà is disappointed, but accepts his return to Ithaca. There he arrives before the competitions that decide on Mangano’s selection of applicants, disguising himself as a beggar. When he is the only one who can draw his old bow in the competition, he is recognized. Douglas kills the suitors and promises Mangano to stay with her.

Kirk Douglas creates one of the most striking embodiments of Ulysses in a role that suits him, and a number of screenwriters have managed to avoid a papier-mâché look à la sandal film, both inside and out. This Odysseus loves the here and now, he has masterfully repressed the past with the loss of memory and his will to return home is probably only a facade. For him, immortality as a god is also too dull, which is offered in this film by Circe. Elaborately done, also textually of good standard.
