Die Brüder Karamasow

Ryevsk, Russland, 1870. William Shatner (Alexej Karamasow), ein angehender Mönch, bringt seinem Bruder, dem Leutnant Yul Brynner (Dmitrij Karamasow), 5000 Rubel von seinem geizigen Vater Lee J. Cobb (Fjodor Karamasow). Brynner erwartet Claire Bloom (Katja), die ihn kaum kennt, aber ihrem Vater, dem Hauptmann, fehlt der Betrag in der Regimentskasse. So ist sie bereit, sich Brynner hinzugeben, der für sie Leidenschaft hegt. Doch der, nach kurzem Überlegen, gibt ihr das Geld so. Er muß in der Folge ins Schuldgefängnis. Später befreit Bloom ihn daraus, denn sie hat seiner Hilfe wegen geerbt und will ihn nun heiraten. Sie kommt nach Ryevsk. Doch Brynner ist distanziert – auch zu seiner Familie. Cobb hat viele Schuldscheine von ihm, die seine Flamme, die Wirtin Maria Schell (Gruschenka), erhält. Sie soll Brynner vor Gericht und ins Gefängnis bringen, der ihm wegen seiner Ansprüche auf den Erbteil seiner Mutter lästig ist. Doch als Schell Brynner kennenlernt, funkt es. Brynner verfolgt Schell mit seiner Eifersucht, da er in ihr noch die Geliebte des Vaters wähnt. Brynners Halbbruder Richard Basehart (Iwan) erfährt von dessen unehelichem Bruder Albert Salmi (Smerdjakow), daß der mit List Brynner dazu bringen will, Cobb zu erschlagen. Doch es kommt anders. Brynner trifft den Diener Edgar Stehli (Grigorij) und ist verblüfft, als die Polizei ihn wegen Mordes an Cobb verhaftet. Als Basehart aus Moskau zurückkehrt, erwartet Salmi Lob für seinen Mord, und schildert seine Tat. Als Basehart ihm Abscheu zeigt, erhängt er sich. So kann Basehart seine Aussage im Prozess nicht erhärten. Brynner wird zu Zwangsarbeit verurteilt. Doch Basehart ermöglicht mit Bestechung seine Flucht, und Schell schließt sich Brynner an.

Anders als der Roman legt der Film komplexitätsvermindernd seinen Schwerpunkt auf Dmitrij Karamasow, und dessen Geschichte ist dramaturgisch ohne Längen durchgearbeitet. Und Yul Brynner schafft mit sparsamen schauspielerischen Mitteln, dass das Psychogramm seiner Rolle transparent wird. Doch Brynner wollte unbedingt Maria Schell als Partnerin, und ihr nimmt man die Gruschenka nicht ab. Manches aus dem Bilderbuch des alten Russland. In Europa gedreht – sehenswert.

Ryevsk, Russia, 1870: William Shatner (Alexei Karamazov), an aspiring monk, brings his brother, Lieutenant Yul Brynner (Dmitry Karamazov), 5000 rubles from his miserly father Lee J. Cobb (Feodor Karamazov). Brynner is expecting Claire Bloom (Katja), who hardly knows him, but her father, the captain, is missing this amount in the regiment’s treasury. So she is ready to give herself to Brynner, who has a passion for her. But he, after a short thought, gives her the money like this. He is sent to the debtors‘ prison. Later, Bloom rescues him from there, because she has due to his help made a heritage and now wants to marry him. She comes to Ryevsk. But Brynner is distant – also to his family. Cobb has many promissory notes from him, which his flame, the landlady Maria Schell (Gruschenka), receives. She is to take Brynner to court and to prison, who is a nuisance to him because of his claims to his mother’s inheritance. However, when Schell meets Brynner, there is a spark. Brynner pursues Schell with his jealousy, because he thinks she is still his father’s mistress. Brynner’s half-brother Richard Basehart (Ivan) learns from his illegitimate brother Albert Salmi (Smerdjakow) that he wants to use cunning to get Brynner to kill Cobb. But matters develop differently. Brynner meets the servant Edgar Stehli (Grigory) and is stunned when the police arrest him for the murder of Cobb. When Basehart returns from Moscow, Salmi awaits praise for his murder and describes his crime. When Basehart shows him disgust, he hangs himself. Thus Basehart cannot substantiate his testimony at trial. Brynner is sentenced to hard labor. But Basehart uses bribery to facilitate his escape, and Schell joins Brynner.

In contrast to the novel, the film focuses on Dmitry Karamazov in a way that reduces complexity, and his story is dramaturgically worked through without lengths. And Yul Brynner uses sparse acting techniques to make the psychogram of his role transparent. But Brynner wanted Maria Schell as a partner at all costs, and the Grushenka is not taken from her.
