Des Königs Admiral

1807. Der britische Kapitän Gregory Peck (Horatio Hornblower) ist seit 7 Monaten mit der H.M.S. Lydia unterwegs. Ziel und Ladung sind unbekannt. Im Stillen Ozean ist der Wind schwach und die Besatzung von Skorbut geplagt. Endlich gelangt er an eine Inselfestung, um eine Ladung Waffen Alec Mango (Don Julian Alvarado) zu übergeben, der mit seinem Aufstand Spanien von einem Angriff auf England ablenken soll. Mango ist `El Supremo‘ und grössenwahnsinnig und benutzt Peck, das spanische Schiff Natividad entern zu lassen und ihm zu übergeben. Ihn erreicht die Nachricht, daß Spanien sich mit England verbündet hat. Virginia Mayo (Lady Barbara  Wellesley),  die Schwester des Herzogs von Wellington, kommt an Bord. Peck greift Mango auf der Natividad an, zerstört das Schiff, Mango stirbt. Mayo erkrankt an Fieber. Peck pflegt sie aufopfernd. Die beiden gestehen einander Liebe. Doch Mayo ist Denis O’Dea (Konteradmiral Sir Rodney Leighton) versprochen, Peck verheiratet. Zu Hause erfährt Peck, dass seine Frau bei der Geburt seines Sohnes gestorben ist. Peck wird auf ein Schiff unter O’Deas Kommando versetzt. Entgegen den Befehlen kapert Peck ein französisches Schiff und findet den Standort der Flotte heraus, welche die englischen Linien durchbrochen hatte. Er setzt sie außer Gefecht. Doch sein Schiff wird vom Ufer aus zerstört. Peck und seine Leute sollen nach Paris gebracht werden. Sie fliehen, als holländische Soldaten verkleidet und übernehmen ein Schiff mit englischen Gefangenen, segeln nach England. Zu Hause besucht Mayo Peck. Ihr Mann kam bei den Kämpfen ums Leben.

Die napoleonischen Kriege und die Kontinentalsperre gegen England erforderten massive Gegenmaßnahmen. In diesem Film mit dem sanften Gregory Peck in der Heldenrolle fühlt sich alles nach englischem Wohnzimmer an und Hornblower erringt seine Erfolge, auch in der Liebe, ohne gefühlten Schweiß. Sehr gefällig und in schönen Farben – und der einzige Spielfilm nach den Hornblower-Geschichten, den es gibt.

1807. British Captain Gregory Peck (Horatio Hornblower) has been sailing with the H.M.S. Lydia for 7 months. Destination and cargo are unknown. In the Pacific Ocean the wind is weak and the crew is plagued by scurvy. At last he arrives at an island fortress to deliver a cargo of weapons to Alec Mango (Don Julian Alvarado), whose rebellion is to distract Spain from attacking England. Mango is ‚El Supremo‘ and megalomaniac and uses Peck to board the Spanish ship Natividad and hand it over to him. News reaches him that Spain has allied itself with England. Virginia Mayo (Lady Barbara Wellesley), the sister of the Duke of Wellington, comes on board. Peck attacks Mango on the Natividad, destroys the ship, Mango dies. Mayo falls ill with a fever. Peck nurses her sacrificially. The two confess their love for each other. But Mayo is promised to Denis O’Dea (Rear Admiral Sir Rodney Leighton), Peck is married. At home, Peck learns that his wife has died giving birth to his son. Peck is transferred to a ship under O’Dea’s command. Against orders, Peck captures a French ship and finds out the location of the fleet that had broken through the English lines. He puts them out of action. But his ship is destroyed from the shore. Peck and his men are to be taken to Paris. They escape, disguised as Dutch soldiers and taking over a ship with English prisoners, sail to England. At home, Mayo visits Peck. Her husband was killed in the fighting.

The Napoleonic Wars and the Continental Blockade against England required massive countermeasures. In this film with the gentle Gregory Peck in the heroic role, everything feels like an English living room and Hornblower achieves his successes, even in love, without any felt sweat. Very pleasing and in beautiful colours – and the only feature film based on the Hornblower stories that exists.
