Der König und Ich

Siam 1862. Deborah Kerr (Anna Leonowens) kommt als Lehrerin für die Kinder des Königs von Siam (Maha Mongkut) an dessen Hof. Obwohl sie entgegen seinem Versprechen im Palast wohnen muß, gewinnt sie seine zahlreichen Kinder und auch seine naiv-fortschrittlich-despotische Art lieb. Als sie ihn angesichts der aus Liebe entlaufenen Frau Rita Moreno (Tuptim) demütigt, verwindet er das nicht. Wochen später stirbt er.

Eindrucksvoll in Aufwand und Dekor, und musikalisch ansprechend, ist der eigentliche Kern des Films Yul Brynners brillante Charakterdarstellung des Königs. Ein Höhepunkt: eine siamesische Ballet-Version von Onkel Toms Hütte. TV Länge des Originals: 128 Minuten.

In 1862 Siam, Deborah Kerr (Anna Leonowens) comes to the court of the King of Siam (Maha Mongkut) as a teacher for his children. Although she has to live in the palace contrary to his promise, she grows fond of his numerous children and his naive, progressive and despotic manner. When she humiliates him in the face of his wife Rita Moreno (Tuptim), who has run away for love, he cannot get over it. He dies weeks later.

Impressive in terms of expense and décor, and musically appealing, the real core of the film is Yul Brynner’s brilliant character portrayal of the king. A highlight: a Siamese ballet version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. TV length of the original film: 128 minutes.
