Der Knochenjäger

New York 1999. Der Polizeidetektiv Denzel Washington (Lincoln Rhyme) ist nach einem Dienstunfall gelähmt, ans Heim gefesselt und deprimiert. Die Polizeiassistentin Angelina Jolie (Amelia Donaghy) entdeckt an einer innerstädtischen Bahnlinie die Leiche von Gary Swanson (Alan Rubin), der mit seiner Frau entführt worden war. Sie erweist sich als hartnäckig geschickt in der Spurensicherung. Ihr Chef bringt die Unterlagen zu Washington, dem Spezialisten für Serienverbrechen. Der will, beeindruckt von ihrer Arbeit, Jolie sehen. Die arbeitet von nun an unter der Leitung von Washington, aber die beiden können nicht verhindern, dass Olivia Birkelung (Lindsay Rubin), die Ehefrau des Opfers, auch vom Entführer getötet wird. Nach einem dritten Opfer nimmt man Washington und Jolie den Fall weg. Nach einem weiteren Mord bemerkt Jolie, dass der Mörder Washington im Visier hat. Sie kommt gerade noch rechtzeitig zu ihm, um Leland Orser (Richard Thompson) zu erschiessen, den Mörder, einen Medizintechniker, der auch Washington betreut hatte. Gemeindsam mit Jolie und anderen feiert Washington Weihnachten….

Obwohl die Story nicht plausibel ist oder gemacht wird, setzt dieser Film Schockelemente wirksam ein – er hat auch ein untergründig erotisches Thema zwischen dem Spurensicherungstalent und dem schwarzen Detektiv. Und er nutzt das Motiv des Meisters, der wie einst Nero Wolfe nicht an der Szene des Verbrechens sein muss, weil er mit seinem Gehirn die Lösung findet.

Police assistant Angelina Jolie (Amelia Donaghy) discovers the body of Gary Swanson (Alan Rubin), who had been kidnapped with his wife, on an inner-city railway line. She proves to be tenaciously adept at securing evidence. Her boss brings the files to Washington, the serial crime specialist. Impressed by her work, he wants to see Jolie. From now on, she works under Washington’s direction, but the two cannot prevent Olivia Birkelung (Lindsay Rubin), the victim’s wife, from also being killed by the kidnapper. After a third victim, Washington and Jolie are taken off the case. After another murder, Jolie realises that the killer has Washington in his sights. She gets to him just in time to shoot Leland Orser (Richard Thompson), the killer, a medical technician who had also mentored Washington. In common with Jolie and others, Washington celebrates Christmas….

Although the story is not plausible or made so, this film uses shock elements effectively – it also has an underlying erotic theme between the forensic talent and the black detective. And it uses the motif of the master who, like Nero Wolfe once did, doesn’t have to be at the scene of the crime because he uses his brain to find the solution.
