Der Kandidat

Los Angeles. Auf dem Nominierungskongress einer Partei bewerben sich Henry Fonda (William Russell) früherer Aussenminister, und Cliff Robertson (Joe Cantwell), ein US-Senator. Für den Kongressauftritt hat Fonda seine von ihm getrennte Frau Margaret Leighton (Alice Russell) zu sich geholt. Beide Kandidaten wollen die Empfehlung des früheren Präsidenten Lee Tracy (Art Hockstader), der schwer krebskrank ist. Robertson droht damit, dem Kongress Fondas mentale Krankheitsgeschichte zu offenbaren. Fonda wird über einen Kriegskameraden Robertsons darüber informiert, dass der im Krieg in der Armee homosexuelle Neigungen gezeigt hat. Fonda weigert sich, dieses Material zu benutzen. Tracy stirbt. Fonda zieht seine Kandidatur zurück, empfiehlt einen Dritten, der auch die Nominierung erhält.

Manches ändert sich nie. Nicht nur das Thema des Films, gedreht während der Johnson Präsidentschaft, hat nichts an Aktualität verloren, sondern auch die lebhafte Inszene und seine Figuren verdienen Interesse. Die klassischen Mittel der Erpressung sind unverändert. Der Originaltitel „The Best Man“ mag ironisch gemeint sein, aber klar ist, dass der skrupulöse Fonda wahrscheinlich nicht die beste Wahl für das Amt ist.. Der Titelvorspann ist ein Schnellkurs in amerikanischer Geschichte.

Fonda has brought his separated wife Margaret Leighton (Alice Russell) to join him for the convention appearance. Both candidates want the endorsement of former President Lee Tracy (Art Hockstader), who is seriously ill with cancer. Robertson threatens to reveal Fonda’s mental health history to Congress. Fonda is informed by a war buddy of Robertson’s that he showed homosexual tendencies in the army during the war. Fonda refuses to use this material. Tracy dies. Fonda withdraws his candidature, recommends a third party, who also receives the nomination.

Some things never change. Not only has the theme of the film, shot during the Johnson presidency, lost none of its topicality, but the lively scene and its characters also deserve interest. The classic methods of blackmail remain unchanged. The original title „The Best Man“ may be ironic, but it is clear that the scrupulous Fonda is probably not the best choice for the office. The title credits are a crash course in American history.
