London 1889. Lionel Atwill (Dr. Mortimer), konsultiert Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes), weil er nach dem Tode des alten Schloßherrn von Baskerville das Leben des aus Kanada anreisenden Erben Richard Greene (Sir Henry Baskerville) bedroht sieht. Mit Doyles populärsten Sherlock Holmes Roman begann die Twenthieth Century Fox mit viel Aufwand und einem sorgsam ausgestattenen Kostümfilm die Serie von Holmes Filmen, in denen Basil Rathbone als Detektiv und Nigel Bruce als sein Helfer Watson auftraten. Neblige Atmosphäre eines Atelier-Moores, straff geführte Handlung und Werktreue sind seine Pluspunkte.

In London 1889, Lionel Atwill (Dr. Mortimer) consults Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) because, after the death of the old lord of Baskerville Castle, he sees the life of the heir Richard Greene (Sir Henry Baskerville), who is travelling from Canada, threatened. Rathbone sends Nigel Bruce (Dr Watson) to Dartmoor, travels undetected after him and solves the mystery of the great menacing hound.

With Doyle’s most popular Sherlock Holmes novel, Twentieth Century Fox began the series of Holmes films featuring Basil Rathbone as the detective and Nigel Bruce as his sidekick Watson, with great expense and a carefully decorated costume film. The misty atmosphere of a studio moor, the tightly plotted story and the faithfulness to the original are its assets.
