Der Henker von Venedig

Venedig 1645. Lex Barker (Sandrigo Bembo) besiegt im Armenviertel Judeka Mario Petri (Boia Guarnieri), den Anführer der Uskoci Freischärler. Barker, Sohn des Dogen Fjodor Schaljapin jr. (Giovanni Bembo), ist in Wahrheit Petris Kind. Er ist mit Sandra Panaro (Contessa Leonora Danin) verlobt, die Großinquisitor Guy Madison (Rodrigo Zeno) unbedingt haben will. So läßt er Barker verhaften, weil er gemeinsam mit Petri Verrat übe und manipuliert den Rat der Zehn. Aus den Bleikammern will er ihm aber die Flucht ermöglichen, auf der er von Petri getötet werden soll. Petri fungiert unter einer schwarzen Maske auch als Venedigs Henker. Barker kann fliehen und gilt als tot. Heimlich heiratet er Panaro. Doch er fällt wieder in Madisons Hände und soll von Petri mit Panaro hingerichtet werden. Doch der hat zuvor im Kampf Barker als seinen Sohn erkannt. Er sorgt dafür daß Madison entmachtet und hingerichtet wird.

Republikanische Strukturen, aber ungezähmter Machtwille eines Mannes, und die familiäre Bipolarität des Helden zu Venedig und den habsburgisch inspirierten Feinden. Vor diesem Hintergrund ein ansehnliches, aber nicht tiefgründiges Stück Abenteuerkino. Ein bisschen Aufwand und Degenwerk. Die Bembos waren eine reale venezianische Patrizierfamilie, aber Giovanni Bembo war nur von 1615 – 1618 Doge.

Venice, 1645: Lex Barker (Sandrigo Bembo) defeats Mario Petri (Boia Guarnieri), the leader of the Uskoci free-spirited, in the poor district of Judeka. Barker, son of Doge Fyodor Shalyapin Jr (Giovanni Bembo), is in fact Petri’s child. He is engaged to Sandra Panaro (Contessa Leonora Danin), whom Grand Inquisitor Guy Madison (Rodrigo Zeno) desperately wants. So he has Barker arrested for treason together with Petri and manipulates the Council of Ten. However, he wants to enable him to escape from the lead chambers, where he is to be killed by Petri. Petri also acts as Venice’s executioner under a black mask. Barker manages to escape and is presumed dead. He secretly marries Panaro. But he falls into Madison’s hands again and is to be executed by Petri with Panaro. However, Petri has recognised Barker as his son during the fight. He sees to it that Madison is deprived of his power and executed.

Republican structures, but one man’s untamed will to power, and the hero’s familial bipolarity to Venice and the Habsburg-inspired enemies. Against this background, a respectable but not profound piece of adventure cinema. A bit of effort and swashbuckling. The Bembos were a real Venetian patrician family, but Giovanni Bembo was Doge only from 1615 – 1618.
