James Ellison (Bill Cody), his wife Helen Burgess (Louisa Cody) and his friend Cary Cooper (Wild Bill Hickock) arrive in Leavenworth, Miss. General John Miljan (George A. They come from Charles Bickford (John Lattimer), whom Cooper shoots after the white defeat at Little Big Horn. Shot by Bickford’s minions, whom he holds at bay while playing cards, Cooper is shot.

Hickock’s death, at the card game in August 1876, is temporally related to Custer’s defeat, but not factually. One is put off by the solid, somewhat sedate staging, the good acting of the crew. Despite the admission at the beginning that things would be presented in a very condensed way, still fresh history is handled very freely. The great age of the Western was not the great age of Cecil B. deMille, even if Graham Greene praised the film (contemporary) very much.
