Der Glöckner von Notre Dame

Paris 1479. Das Fest der Narren wird gefeiert. Gina Lollobrigida (Esmeralda), eine ägyptische Zigeunerin, tanzt auf dem Platz vor Notre Dame, der Kathedrale. Anthony Quinn (Quasimodo), der bucklige und einäugige Ziehling des Alain Cuny (Claude Frollo, Bischof von Paris), wird zum König der Narren gewählt. Cuny, dessen Lüsternheit Lollobrigida erregt hat, befiehlt Quinn, sie ihm zu bringen. Doch der Hauptmann der Wache, Jean Danet (Phoebus de Chateaupers), bewahrt sie und macht ihr schöne Augen, sodaß sie sich verliebt. Quinn wird auf dem Pranger ausgepeitscht. Lollobrigida bringt ihm zu trinken. Doch als sie ein Stelldichein mit Danet hat, startet Cuny, der sie verfolgt, eine Messerattacke auf Danet, die ihr zugerechnet wird. Sie kommt vor Gericht, wird zum Tode verurteilt. Quinn holt sie nach Notre Dame, ins Kirchenasyl. König Jean Tissier (Ludwig XI) lässt das Asyl für diesen Fall aufheben. Zum Kummer Quinns stirbt Lollobridiga beim Sturm auf die Kathedrale – er besucht ihre Leiche in den Katakomben und stirbt.

Die vorangegangenen größeren Verfilmungen des Jahrhundertromans von Hugo hatten das dramatische Element betont. Delannoy hingegen gönnt sich eine beschreibende Einführung und setzt dann, mit leuchtenden Farben, auf ein Spiel von Archetypen als Figuren, deren Individualisierung nur stören würde. Er spart auch das tragische Ende von Esmeralda nicht aus, überhöht es gar. Schauspielerisch ragen Cuny und Quinn heraus.

Paris 1479. The Feast of Fools is being celebrated. Gina Lollobrigida (Esmeralda), an Egyptian gypsy, dances in the square in front of Notre Dame, the cathedral. Anthony Quinn (Quasimodo), the hunchbacked and one-eyed zogling of Alain Cuny (Claude Frollo, Bishop of Paris), is elected King of Fools. Cuny, whose lechery has aroused Lollobrigida, orders Quinn to bring her to him. But the captain of the guard, Jean Danet (Phoebus de Chateaupers), preserves her and makes eyes at her so that she falls in love. Quinn is flogged on the pillory. Lollobrigida brings him drink. But when she has a tryst with Danet, Cuny, who is pursuing her, launches a knife attack on Danet, which is attributed to her. She is tried and sentenced to death. Quinn takes her to Notre Dame, to the church asylum. King Jean Tissier (Louis XI) has the asylum lifted for this case. To Quinn’s chagrin, Lollobridiga dies in the storming of the cathedral – he visits her body in the catacombs and dies.

Previous major film adaptations of Hugo’s novel of the century had emphasised the dramatic element. Delannoy, on the other hand, allows himself a descriptive introduction and then, with bright colours, relies on a play of archetypes as characters whose individualisation would only be distracting. He does not spare Esmeralda’s tragic end, even glorifying it. Cuny and Quinn stand out as actors.
