Das unsterbliche Monster

England, 1900. Der Sprecher berichtet über einen Fluch, der über der Familie (Hammond) liege. Ein Mitglied der Familie soll einst dem Teufel seine Seele verkauft haben und seitdem in einem Gemach des Landsitzes verborgen sein, um gelegentlich des Nachts auf Menschenjagd zu gehen. So ist Heather Angel (Helga Hammond) beunruhigt, als ihr Bruder John Howard (Oliver Hammond) des Nachts verletzt spät aus seinem Laboratorium kommt – sie hat zuvor Schreie gehört und man findet die Laborschwester Valerie Traxler (Kate O’Malley) im Koma – beide von einem Monster attackiert. Scotland Yard Inspektor Aubrey Mather (Craig) erscheint tags darauf; diverse Leute bemühen sich nun um Aufklärung. Traxler, anscheinend unter Drogen, stirbt. Da taucht das Monster wieder auf, wird erschossen und verwandelt sich in Howard – die Männer der Familie hatten jahrhundertelang unter Lycanthropie gelitten, und der Hausarzt Bramwell Fletcher (Dr. Geoffrey Covert) hatte Howard heimlich lange mit Schlangengift behandelt, um ihn im Zaum zu halten.

Fans haben diesen Film vorteilhaft mit „The Wolf Man“; 1941, von George Waggner, verglichen, dem Kultstück des Genres, und obwohl er atmosphärisch geschickt inszeniert vielversprechend beginnt, hilft ihm die konfuse und hastige Entwicklung der Geschichte, die auf einem populären Roman der romantischen Autorin beruht, nicht. Nüchterne Kriminalistik zerstört das Geheimnis.

England, 1900. The speaker reports about a curse that lies over the family (Hammond). A member of the family is said to have once sold his soul to the devil and since then has been hidden in a chamber of the country estate to occasionally go hunting for people at night. So Heather Angel (Helga Hammond) is alarmed when her brother John Howard (Oliver Hammond) comes out of his laboratory late at night injured – she has heard screams earlier and lab nurse Valerie Traxler (Kate O’Malley) is found in a coma – both attacked by a monster. Scotland Yard Inspector Aubrey Mather (Craig) appears the following day; various people are now trying to solve the case. Traxler, apparently drugged, dies. Then the monster reappears, is shot and turns into Howard – the men of the family had suffered from lycanthropy for centuries, and the family doctor Bramwell Fletcher (Dr. Geoffrey Covert) had secretly treated Howard with snake venom for a long time to keep him in check.

Fans have favourably compared this film to „The Wolf Man“; 1941, by George Waggner, the cult piece of the genre, and although it begins promisingly, skilfully directed atmospherically, it is not helped by the confused and hasty development of the story, based on a popular novel by the Romantic author. Sober detective work destroys the mystery.
