Das Geheimnis der falschen Braut

Réunion. Jean-Paul Belmondo (Louis Mahé), dem die Hälfte einer Zigarettenfabrik gehört, empfängt im Hafen seine Braut Catherine Deneuve (Marion Vergano), die er noch nie gesehen und durch ein Inserat kennengelernt hat und die sich ‚Julie Rossel‘ nennt. Ihr Photo stimmt nicht, der Ring passt nicht bei der Heirat. Sie bekommt Vollmacht auf seinem Konto und brennt mit 28 Millionen Franc durch. Nelly Borgeaud (Berthe Roussel) trifft ein, deren Schwester auf dem Schiff nach Réunion verschwand; gemeinsam beauftragt man Detektiv Michel Bouquet (Comolli). Belmondo erholt sich in Frankreich, trifft in Antibe Deneuve, die im Nachtclub ‚Phoenix‘ arbeitet. Er kann sie nicht töten, verfällt ihr erneut. Als Bouquet sie in Aix-en-Province aufspürt, tötet er ihn. Deneuve hat ihre Beute ihrem Komplicen abgeliefert. Auch Belmondo hat kein Geld mehr, aber die beiden bleiben zusammen.

Truffaut beginnt pfiffig – aber nach dem Widersehen von Betrügerin und Betrogenem in Frankreich versandet der Film. Belmondo ist ihr eben verfallen – ohne doppelten Boden. Der Zuschauer solls glauben, aber es fällt ihm emotional wie logisch schwer, und er mag auch nicht eine Stunde darüber nachdenken. Auch ein Besuch der beiden von „Johnny Guitar“ im Kino hilft da nicht weiter…

Jean-Paul Belmondo (Louis Mahé), who owns half of a cigarette factory, receives his bride Catherine Deneuve (Marion Vergano) in the harbour, whom he has never seen and met through an advertisement and who calls herself ‚Julie Rossel‘. Her photo is wrong, the ring doesn’t fit when she marries. She gets authority on his account and runs off with 28 million francs. Nelly Borgeaud (Berthe Roussel) arrives, whose sister disappeared on the ship to Réunion; together they hire detective Michel Bouquet (Comolli). Belmondo recovers in France, meets Antibe Deneuve, who works in the nightclub ‚Phoenix‘. He cannot kill her, falls for her again. When Bouquet tracks her down in Aix-en-Province, he kills him. Deneuve has delivered her loot to her accomplice. Belmondo is also out of money, but the two stay together.

Truffaut begins smartly – but after the reunion of the deceiver and the deceived in France, the film peters out. Belmondo has just fallen for her – without a false bottom. The viewer is supposed to believe it, but he finds it emotionally and logically difficult, and he doesn’t want to think about it for an hour. Even a visit to the cinema by the two from „Johnny Guitar“ doesn’t help…
