Das Geheimnis der Agatha Christie

Dezember 1926. Vanessa Redgrave (Agatha Christie) kehrt nach einem Auftritt zur Vorstellung ihres Buches ‚The Murder of Roger Ackroyd‘ zurück ins heimische Haus. Ihr Gatte Tomothy Halton (Archibald Christie) verweigert dem US-Journalisten Dustin Hoffman (Wally Stanton) ein Interview, dann streitet das Paar, weil Halton sich seiner Sekretärin Celia Gregory (Celia Neele) wegen von ihr scheiden lassen will. Das Wochenende hat er mit Gregory in Harrogate geplant. So setzt Redgrave sich ab, die Polizei sucht sie – und sie begibt sich nach unter dem Namen ‚Neele‘ nach Harrogate ins ‚Old Swan Hotel‘. Das Verschwinden erregt Aufsehen – Hoffman ermittelt für seine Zeitung und entdeckt Redgrave in Harrogate. Unter falschem Namen lernt er sie kennen – und eine unterkühlte Liebe zueinander entwickelt sich. Endlich durchschaut er, was sie vorhat: einen Selbstmord, den sie Gregory in die Schuhe schieben will. Er rettet Redgraves Leben. Sie kehrt zu ihrem Mann zurück. Kurz danach lässt sie sich scheiden.

Die Inszenierung ist purer Voyeurismus: Die Rolle von Dustin Hoffman ermöglicht es, bei Geschehnissen dabei zu sein, die sehr privat und in Wirklichkeit nicht aufgeklärt sind; sie spiegelt das Geschehen in seiner Reaktion, und gibt etwas Distanz zu der These des raffinierten Selbstmordes, die der Film aufstellt. Der Zeit und dem Ort gerecht gibt sich das Ganze formell und nicht locker, und Optik und Atmosphäre stehen über Handlung. Hoffman und Redgrave sind sehr gut.

December 1926. Vanessa Redgrave (Agatha Christie) returns home after a performance to launch her book ‚The Murder of Roger Ackroyd‘. Her husband Tomothy Halton (Archibald Christie) refuses to give an interview to US journalist Dustin Hoffman (Wally Stanton), then the couple quarrel because Halton wants to divorce her for the sake of his secretary Celia Gregory (Celia Neele). He has the weekend planned with Gregory in Harrogate. So Redgrave absconds, the police are looking for her – and she goes to Harrogate under the name ‚Neele‘ to the ‚Old Swan Hotel‘. The disappearance causes a stir – Hoffman investigates for his newspaper and discovers Redgrave in Harrogate. He gets to know her under a false name – and a cool love affair develops. He finally sees through what she is up to: a suicide, which she wants to blame on Gregory. He saves Redgrave’s life. She returns to her husband. Shortly afterwards she divorces him.

The production is pure voyeurism: Dustin Hoffman’s role makes it possible to be present at events that are very private and in reality unresolved; it mirrors the events in his reaction, and gives some distance to the thesis of the sophisticated suicide that the film sets up. In keeping with the time and place, the whole thing is formal rather than loose, and visuals and atmosphere take precedence over plot. Hoffman and Redgrave are very good.
