Das Ding aus einer anderen Welt

Anchorage, Alaska, 1. November 1950. General David McMahon (Fogarty) befiehlt Kenneth Tobey (Captain Patrick Handy), unverzüglich mit Ausrüstung und seinen Leuten an den Nordpol zu fliegen, wo der Forscher Robert Cornthwaite (Dr. Arthur Carrington) und seine Leute die Landung und Explosion eines seltsamen Objektes beobachtet hätten. Dort angekommen, begeben sie sich an Ort und Stelle  und zerstören mit einer Thermobombe versehentlich das Raumschiff, entdecken aber daneben ein im Eis steckendes Wesen. Das holen sie in die Station. Das Eis schmilzt ; das Wesen agiert feindselig und entkommt ins Eis. Zwischen Tobey und Cornthwaite entsteht ein Konflikt : Corntwaithe will das Wesen auch um den Preis von Menschenleben schonen. Von dem Wesen, das pflanzlicher Struktur ist, züchtet er gar mit Blutplasma Ableger. Telefonische Orders von McMahon stützen ihn. Tobey lässt sich jedoch nicht beirren. Sein Flirt, die Assistentin Margaret Sheridan (Nikki Nicolson) bemerkt, Gemüse könne man kochen. Mit Kerosin und Elektrizität wird das Wesen, zum Menschen gefühllos und von höherer Intelligenz, schließlich vernichtet.

Howard Hawks tarnt sich hier doppelt : mit einem ungewohnten Science Fiction Stoff und dem formalen Regie-Credit für Christian Nyby. Doch die Essenz ist reiner Hawks: eine Männergruppe wehrt Gefahr von außen ab und schert sich nicht um Autoritäten, eine Frau mit erotischer Initiative, kontinuierlich mit Humor. Als Science Fiction untypisch : Die Macht des fremden Monsters steht nie im emotionalen Mittelpunkt, sondern die Charaktere und Reaktionen der Verteidiger. Sehenswert.

Anchorage, Alaska, 1 November 1950. General David McMahon (Fogarty) orders Kenneth Tobey (Captain Patrick Handy) to fly immediately with equipment and his men to the North Pole, where explorer Robert Cornthwaite (Dr Arthur Carrington) and his men have observed the landing and explosion of a strange object. Once there, they go to the spot and accidentally destroy the spaceship with a thermal bomb, but discover a creature stuck in the ice next to it. They bring it into the station. The ice melts ; the creature acts hostile and escapes into the ice. A conflict arises between Tobey and Cornthwaite : Corntwaithe wants to spare the creature even at the cost of human lives. He even uses blood plasma to breed offshoots of the creature, which has a plant structure. Telephone orders from McMahon support him. Tobey, however, is not deterred. His flirt, the assistant Margaret Sheridan (Nikki Nicolson), remarks that vegetables can be cooked. With paraffin and electricity, the creature, numb to humans and of superior intelligence, is finally destroyed.

Howard Hawks does double camouflage here : with an unusual science fiction material and formal directing credit for Christian Nyby. But the essence is pure Hawks : a group of men fend off danger from outside and don’t give a damn about authority, a woman with erotic initiative, continuously with humour. Atypical as science fiction : the power of the alien monster is never the emotional focus, but the characters and reactions of the defenders. Worth seeing.
