Texas 1909. Eine Outcast Bande unter Richard Boone (John Fain) überfällt die McCandles-Farm; mangels Beute entführen sie den kleinen John Ethan Wayne (Jake McCandles) und fordern Lösegeld von einer Million Dollar. John Wayne (Jacob McCandles), der seit Jahren in Mexiko lebt, wird verständigt. Als er kommt, machen sich Texas Rangers schon zur Verfolgung auf. Wayne beschließt, die Sache lieber allein mit dem Apatschen Bruce Cabot (Sam Sharpnose) zu versuchen. Die Rangers geraten in einen Hinterhalt Boones. Wynes Söhne Patrick Wayne (James McCandles) und Chris Mitchum (Michael McCandles) schließen sich nun ihm an. Wayne führt eine Kassette mit dem Lösegeld bei sich. Man überquert den Rio Grande. In der mexikanischen Stadt Escondera wehrt Wayne den Versuch ab, das Lösegeld zu stehlen. Schließlich wird Wayne in das Versteck Boones geführt, um Lösegeld gegen das Kind zu tauschen. Boone findet in der Kassette nur Papierschnipsel. Im Showdown kann Wayne das Kind retten.

Der Film hat ein Regie-Problem (George Sherman ist ein B-Direktor an einem A Film) und ein Script Problem (Das Buch kommt von der Schreiberin für „Dirty Harry“ mit leichter Gemahnung an „Rio Grande“ von John Ford). So dürfen sich viele Figuren absolut töricht verhalten oder sind nur Zierrat, so wird permanent etwas explizit erklärt, was sich entwickeln müsste. Nur die Photographie stimmt, und John Wayne stimmt noch nahezu, obwohl der Film eigentlich nur eine Demonstration war, daß es ihn noch gab und daß er im Westen keine Autos braucht. Warum Produzent John Wayne aber an der falschen Stelle sparte, ist nicht recht erklärlich….

Texas 1909: An outcast gang under Richard Boone (John Fain) raids the McCandles farm; for lack of loot they kidnap little John Ethan Wayne (Jake McCandles) and demand a ransom of one million dollars. John Wayne (Jacob McCandles), who has lived in Mexico for years, is notified. When he arrives, Texas Rangers already set off in pursuit. Wayne decides that he would rather try the matter alone with the aggravation of Bruce Cabot (Sam Sharpnose). The Rangers are ambushed by Boone.Wayne’s sons Patrick Wayne (James McCandles) and Chris Mitchum (Michael McCandles) now join him.  Wayne carries a cassette with the ransom money. One crosses the Rio Grande. In the Mexican town of Escondera Wayne fends off the attempt to steal the ransom. Finally Wayne is led to Boone’s hideout to exchange the ransom for the child. Boone finds only scraps of paper in the cassette. In the showdown Wayne can save the child.

The film has a directing problem (George Sherman is a B director on an A film) and a script problem (the book is from the writer for „Dirty Harry“ with a slight reminiscence of „Rio Grande“ by John Ford). So many characters are allowed to behave absolutely foolishly or are just decoration, an there is always something explicitly explained which would have to develop. Only the photography is correct, and John Wayne is still almost correct, although the film was actually only a demonstration that he still existed and that he doesn’t need cars in the West. But why producer John Wayne saved in the wrong place is not really explainable
