Algol

Der Stern „Algol“ verdunkelt sich in jeder dritten Nacht um 10 Stunden. Er sendet mit John Gottowt (Algol) einen Dämonen auf die Erde. Der wird Zweithauer in der Kohlegrube unter Emil Jannings (Robert Herne) und offenbart ihm das Geheimnis der Energiestrahlen, die Jannings binnen eines Jahres nutzen muß. Der verschmäht Gertrud Welcker (Leonore Nissen), die Erbin der Kohlegrube, und baut die „Bios-Werke“, welche die Welt mit Energie versorgen können, was sie bald auch tun – mit Ausnahme des Nachbarlandes, in dem Hans Adalbert v. Schlettow (Peter Hell) lebt, einst Rivale mit Jannings um die Gunst von Hanna Ralph (Maria Obal). Die Kohlengrube hat schwere Zeiten; Welcker heiratet Jannings. Das Land lebt nun ohne Kohle und ist dank Jannings frei und reich. 20 Jahre später. Das Nachbarland hat keine Kohle mehr und zahlt teuer für Jannings Strom. Jannings Sohn Ernst Hofmann (Reginald Herne) führt mit der Ausländerin Erna Morena (Yella Ward) ein Wohlleben; im Nachbarland rebellieren die Arbeiter; v. Schlettow fordert „für die Menschheit“ vergeblich Jannings Geheimnis. Welcker stirbt. Jannings wird alt und fiebert. Er will dem Nachbarland das Wasser aus dem Valstrom ableiten. Hofmann rebelliert gegen Jannings. Der zerstört die Energiemaschine in der Halle der ewigen Kraft und erkennt seinen Irrweg. Stummfilm.

Zweitklassige Drehbuchautoren, zweitklassige Regie und ein Stoff, in dem nichts so recht zusammenpasst. Was als Anregung für Fritz Langs „Metropolis“ angesehen wird, lässt unklare galaktische „Mächte“ zu recht beliebigen persönlichen „Schicksalen“ werden, fast schon um ihrer selbst willen. Wer mit diesen Mächten nahekommt, schneidet unweigerlich Grimassen, auch wenn er ansonsten ein guter Schauspieler ist – davon gibt einige in diesem Film. Was ist die Botschaft? Niemand kann es sagen. Da hilft auch nichts, daß „Algol“ ein realer Stern mit ein paar Eigenheiten ist.

The star „Algol“ darkens by 10 hours every third night. It sends with John Gottowt (Algol) a demon to the earth. He becomes second tusk in the coal mine under Emil Jannings (Robert Herne) and reveals to him the secret of the energy rays that Jannings must use within a year. He spurns Gertrud Welcker (Leonore Nissen), the heiress to the coal mine, and builds the „Bios-Werke“, which can supply the world with energy, which they soon do – with the exception of the neighboring country where Hans Adalbert v. Schlettow (Peter Hell) lives, once a rival with Jannings for the favor of Hanna Ralph (Maria Obal). The coal mine has hard times; Welcker marries Jannings. The country now lives without coal and is free and rich thanks to Jannings. 20 years later. The neighboring country has no more coal and pays dearly for Jannings electricity. Jannings son Ernst Hofmann (Reginald Herne) leads a good life with the foreigner Erna Morena (Yella Ward); in the neighboring country the workers rebel; v. Schlettow demands „for humanity“ Jannings secret in vain. Welcker dies. Jannings becomes old and feverish. He wants to divert the water from the Valstrom to the neighboring country. Hofmann rebels against Jannings. He destroys the energy machine in the Hall of Eternal Power and realizes his error. Silent movie.

Second-rate scriptwriters, second-rate directing and a material in which nothing really fits together. What is seen as the inspiration for Fritz Lang’s „Metropolis“ turns unclear galactic „powers“ into quite arbitrary personal „fates“, almost for their own sake. Whoever gets close to these powers inevitably makes faces, even if he is otherwise a good actor – there are some of them in this film. What is the message? No one can say. It doesn’t help that „Algol“ is a real star with a few peculiarities.
