Der Geheimdienstler Eberhard Leithoff (George Finné) kommt bei einer Explosion auf der „Herkulaneum“ ums Leben. Seiner Schwester Elfriede Borodin (Jeanette Finné) kann er gerade noch einen versiegelten Brief für das Außenministerium übergeben. Eine freundliche Dame nimmt sich ihrer an – und sperrt sie bei sich ein, findet auch den Brief. Sie will fliehen. Das Ministerium sucht den Brief. Carlo Aldini (Pierre Lafitte), Ex-Steuermann der „Herkulaneum“, macht sich auf die Suche, gründet mit seiner Bekannten Eve Grey (Lucienne Ferreoni) dazu die ‚Abenteurer GmbH‘. Sie werden von Valy Arnheim (C. Wittington), einem Industriellen, der helfen will. Doch er führt sie in eine Falle, und beide müssen – separat – fliehen. Die beiden geben ein Inserat auf – viele melden sich, darunter auch Hilda Bayley (Rita van den Meer), und (Georges Herward), ein Cousin Borodins, der mit Geld hilft. Ein Besuch bei Bayley ist wieder eine Falle; Aldini entkommt. Nach einer Verfolgungsjagd im Auto kann Borodin befreit werden. Sie begibt sich zum Minister – doch der entpuppt sich als Drahtzieher, der den Brief verschwinden lassen wollte. Er wird verhaftet.

Der zweite Film nach Agatha Christie, deren quirliger Roman ein Publikumserfolg war. In der deutschen Verfilmung durfte aus gutem Grund nicht, wie im Prolog des Romans, die „Lusitania“ untergehen. Und der in Berlin – mit eher französischer – Kulisse gedrehte Film steht eher in der Tradition der trivialen Detektiv-Filme Weimars als in britischer Atmosphäre. Dennoch: er lässt im Plotting Christie erkennen und kann, wenn auch nicht als Meisterwerk, aus Neugier noch gut betrachtet werden. Stummfilm.

The secret service agent Eberhard Leithoff (George Finné) is killed in an explosion on the „Herkulaneum“. He is just able to hand over a sealed letter for the foreign ministry to his sister Elfriede Borodin (Jeanette Finné). A kind lady takes care of her – and locks her in her room, also finding the letter. She wants to escape. The ministry is looking for the letter. Carlo Aldini (Pierre Lafitte), ex-steersman of the „Herculaneum“, sets off in search of it, founds the ‚Adventurer GmbH‘ with his acquaintance Eve Grey (Lucienne Ferreoni). They are approached by Valy Arnheim (C. Wittington), an industrialist who wants to help. But he leads them into a trap and they both have to flee – separately. The two place an advertisement – many come forward, including Hilda Bayley (Rita van den Meer), and (Georges Herward), a cousin of Borodin’s, who helps with money. A visit to Bayley is again a trap; Aldini escapes. After a car chase, Borodin can be freed. She goes to the minister – but he turns out to be the mastermind who wanted the letter to disappear. He is arrested. Silent movie.

The second film after Agatha Christie, whose lively novel was a hit with the public. In the German film version, for good reason, the „Lusitania“ was not allowed to sink, as in the novel’s prologue. And the film, shot in Berlin – with a rather French backdrop – is more in the tradition of Weimar’s trivial detective films than in a British atmosphere. Nevertheless: it does reveal Christie in the plotting and, even if not a masterpiece, can still be viewed well out of curiosity.
