Anders Ek (Frost, Clown), Gudrun Brost (Frau Frost), Gunnar Björnstrand (Theaterdirektor Sjuberg).
Skåne, Sweden, c. 1910. The director of the Alberti Circus, Ake Grönberg (Albert Johansson), is virtually bankrupt. The circus is performing in town, and Grönberg visits his estranged wife, Annika Tretow (Agda), who makes a good living running a small shop. He wants to stay with her. She refuses. Grönberg’s girlfriend, Harriet Andersson (Anne), is jealous of this and allows herself to be seduced by Hasse Ekman (Frans), an actor at the local theatre. Grönberg discovers her infidelity and is defeated by his rival in a fistfight. Grönberg’s attempt at suicide fails. The circus moves on. Grönberg and Andersson are back together.
With this film, Bergman entered a new phase in his career: his protagonists are all unhappy and have failed. They have a glimmer of hope here and there, which quickly fades, yet they carry on with their lives. Not as profound as Bergman’s finest works, but it has stood the test of time and is well worth watching.
