A Chorus Line

New York 1983. Hunderte von Tänzern tanzen vor und Terrence Mann (Larry), der Assistent des Produzenten Michael Douglas (Zach), trifft eine Vorauswahl. Da taucht zusätzlich Alyson Reed (Cassie) auf, eine erfahrene Tänzerin. Sie war früher mit Douglas liiert. Erst auf ihr Insistieren ist sie bei den sechzehn Finalisten dabei. Jeder davon soll Douglas seine persönliche Geschichte erzählen. Jeder tut das, und auch Reed, deren Erfolg in Hollywood ausblieb, fügt sich ein.  Am Ende werden acht ausgewählt, Reed ist dabei.

Wie – das etwas ältere – Musical «Cabaret» ist auch dieses nicht dem Märchen, sondern der Wirklichkeit verpflichtet, der damaligen Gegenwart, aus Interviews herausdestilliert. Attenborough hat aus einer verbal orientierten Vorlage visuell einiges herausgeholt – er wird gestützt durch die Ohrwurmqualität der Songs und einer guten Besetzung. Nicht gealtert, und, obwohl er wenig sagt, mit einer guten Performance von Michael Douglas.

New York 1983: Hundreds of dancers audition and Terrence Mann (Larry), the assistant to producer Michael Douglas (Zach), makes a preliminary selection. Alyson Reed (Cassie), an experienced dancer, also turns up. She used to be in a relationship with Douglas. It is only at her insistence that she is included in the sixteen finalists. Each of them is asked to tell Douglas their personal story. Everyone does, and Reed, whose success in Hollywood failed to materialise, also joins in.  In the end, eight are chosen and Reed is among them.

Like the somewhat older musical „Cabaret“, this one is not based on a fairy tale, but on reality, the present day, distilled from interviews. Attenborough has visually extracted a lot from a verbally orientated original – he is supported by the catchy quality of the songs and a good cast. Not aged, and, although he says little, with a good performance from Michael Douglas.
