2001 – Odyssee im Weltraum

Prolog: Ein schwarzer Monolith beeinflusst die Entwicklung der vorzeitlichen Affen. Im Jahre 2001 wird ein solcher Monolith von William Sylvester (Dr. Heywood Floyd) auf dem Mond ausgemacht. Seine Strahlung weist nach dem Planeten Jupiter. 18 Monate später bricht eine Expedition in Richtung Jupiter auf. An Bord sind (neben schlafenden Wissenschaftlern) Keir Dullea (David Bowman) und Gary Lockwood (Frank Poole). Der perfekte Bordcomputer HAL 9000 möchte die beiden loswerden, aber Dullea überlebt dessen Intrige und kann HAL ausschalten. Er findet am Ziel einen weiteren Monolithen, altert schnell und wird als Riesenfötus reinkarniert.

Ein Klassiker des Science Fiction Films, technisch perfekt gemacht, und musikalisch mit Musik der Klassik (und Wiener Klassik) unterlegt. Es gibt wenig Dialog, dafür viel Optik. Und da die Botschaft ist, dass wir vieles nicht verstehen, ist das Bemühen, das Geschehen zu erklären, eitel.. Die sehr kurze literarische Vorlage spielt im Jahre 1996 und befasst sich nur mit dem Objekt auf dem Mond.

Prologue: A black monolith influences the evolution of prehistoric apes. In 2001, such a monolith is spotted on the moon by William Sylvester (Dr Heywood Floyd). Its radiation points to the planet Jupiter. 18 months later, an expedition sets off in the direction of Jupiter. On board are (besides sleeping scientists) Keir Dullea (David Bowman) and Gary Lockwood (Frank Poole). The perfect on-board computer HAL 9000 wants to get rid of the two, but Dullea survives his intrigue and is able to switch off HAL. He finds another monolith at the destination, ages rapidly and is reincarnated as a giant foetus.

A classic science fiction film, technically perfectly done, and musically set to classical (and Viennese classical) music. There is little dialogue, but a lot of visuals. And since the message is that we don’t understand much, the effort to explain what is happening is vain…. The very short literary original is set in 1996 and deals only with the object on the moon.
