Südseenächte

Hollywood. Filmstar Robert Young (Brooks Mason) will seinen Fans entkommen. Als er den Ananasplantagenbesitzer Robert Young (George Smith) aus Hawaii kennen lernt, einen Doppelgänger, tauscht er mit ihm die Rollen. Der Filmstar fährt nach Hawaii, der Plantagenbesitzer vertritt ihn in New York auf einer Tournee für persönliche Auftritte. Auf dem Schiff nach Hawaii lernt er die Musicaldarsteller Gracie Allen (Millie de Grasse) und Eleanor Powell (Dorothy March) kennen. Der Plantagenbesitzer wird als (George) von seinen Fans bedrängt und muss ins Krankenhaus. In Honolulu lernt der Filmstar „seine“ Verlobte Rita Johnson (Cecelia Grayson) kennen. Deren Vater Clarence Kolb (Horace) glaubt, er habe  50.000 Dollar veruntreut, die er ihm für ein Geschäft gegeben hat, und lässt ihn verhaften. Er wird  wieder freigelassen. Johnson will aber jemand andern heiraten, und Young ist frei für Powell.

Ein braves Eigenlob Hollywoods aus dem MGM-Stall. Robert Young ist glatt und wenig profiliert- und wären nicht Gesang- und Tanznummern von Eleanor Powell, so wäre der Film vergessen. Eskapismus pur – und vielleicht deshalb im Deutschland 1939 ein grosser Erfolg.

Hollywood. Film star Robert Young (Brooks Mason) wants to escape his fans. When he meets Robert Young (George Smith), a pineapple plantation owner from Hawaii who bears a striking resemblance to him, he swaps places with him. The film star travels to Hawaii, whilst the plantation owner stands in for him in New York on a tour of personal appearances. On the ship to Hawaii, he meets the musical performers Gracie Allen (Millie de Grasse) and Eleanor Powell (Dorothy March). The plantation owner is mobbed by his fans as (George) and has to be taken to hospital. In Honolulu, the film star meets ‘his’ fiancée Rita Johnson (Cecelia Grayson). Her father Clarence Kolb (Horace) believes he has embezzled the $50,000 he gave him for a business venture and has him arrested. He is released. However, Johnson wants to marry someone else, and Young is free for Powell.

A modest piece of Hollywood self-praise from the MGM stable. Robert Young is bland and unremarkable – and were it not for Eleanor Powell’s song and dance numbers, the film would be forgotten. Pure escapism – and perhaps that is why it was such a huge success in Germany in 1939.
