Reise ohne Wiederkehr

Hongkong, November 1932. In einer Bar verursacht eine kurze Begegnung von William Powell (Dan Hardesty) und Kay Francis (Joan Ames) einen coup de foudre. US-Polizist Warren Hymer (Steve Burke) verhaftet Powell, als er die Bar verlässt, und  bringt ihn an Bord des Passagierdampfers S.S. Maloa. Dort ohne Handschellen, trifft er Francis wieder.  Sie ist todkrank. Beide kennen das Schicksal des anderen nicht. Sein Fluchtversuch in Honolulu scheitert, weil er sie lieber nach einem Zusammenbruch zum Schiff bringt. Am Ziel, am 15. Dezember 1932 in San Francisco, verabredet er mit ihr ein Treffen im Agua Caliente für die Sylvesternacht, bevor er diskret abgeführt wird. Im Agua Caliente zerbrechen, dem Brauch der Liebenden entsprechend, zwei Gläser allein..

Ein magischer Film – wie « Casablanca ». Es fanden sich : eine brauchbare Grundidee, ein Drehbuchautor, der Situationen darin aus eigener Anschaung kannte und Witz besaß, ein Regisseur, der wußte, daß emotionale Wirkungen weniger durch Pomp als durch Zurückhaltung erzeugt werden, und mit Powell und Francis glaubwürdige Helden. Hochromantische, durch humoristische Einlagen abgefederte Tragödie – im eleganten Smoking, in bester Gesellschaft, und sehr knapp erzählt.

Hong Kong, November 1932. In a bar, a brief encounter between William Powell (Dan Hardesty) and Kay Francis (Joan Ames) causes a coup de foudre. US police officer Warren Hymer (Steve Burke) arrests Powell as he leaves the bar and takes him aboard the passenger liner S.S. Maloa. There, without handcuffs, he meets Francis again.  She is deathly ill. Neither knows the fate of the other. His attempt to escape in Honolulu fails because he prefers to take her to the ship after a breakdown. At his destination, San Francisco on 15 December 1932, he arranges to meet her at the Agua Caliente on New Year’s Eve before he is discreetly taken away. In the Agua Caliente, according to the custom of lovers, two glasses break alone….

A magical film – like “ Casablanca „. There was: a useful basic idea, a scriptwriter who knew situations in it from his own experience and had wit, a director who knew that emotional effects are created less by pomp than by restraint, and with Powell and Francis credible heroes. Highly romantic tragedy, cushioned by humorous interludes – in an elegant dinner jacket, in the best company, and very succinctly told.
